What release agent with DevCon Plastic Steel?

Has anyone ever bedded a rifle with JB Weld or Pro Bed 2000?
I've used JB Weld in the past, along with Steel Bed and some ceramic epoxies used in the medical field.

Pro Bed is all I use now. I put it in a 20ml cath tip syringe and warm it with a hair dryer to apply.

How you take it out of the bedding is an area that most overlook. Its an area that will cause problems if you're not careful.

I use SEM 39747 two-part epoxy for replacement panels on cars and trucks, it somewhat thinner than Devcon, how can I measure shrinkage?
I've never tried to measure shrinkage. If I was going to attempt it, I would want a container open on both ends with a precision ID. The only thing I've thought of is a ball bearing assembly. You can probably buy one with a smooth 1" ID from a bearing supply store for around $10.

I would wax the ID and fill it with that SEM product. After the epoxy cures, you can knock it out and compare the epoxy OD to the Bearing ID.

You need to have tools that will measure to a tenth to do this. If it shrinks enough that you don't need tools to measure in increments that small, It shrinks too much for the application.

How much does it expand in the chamber?
I mix it, if it’s cold in the shop I’ll warm it up and place it in the chamber. It blows up pretty big until the air percolates out and it drops under it’s own weight. I also like 10110 but have to use carbide on clean up. Haven’t used pro bed but have experimented with a few others. I buy the marine Tex in 3lb cans and use it the most.

... I also like 10110 but have to use carbide on clean up...
10110 cleans up very easy with a normal sanding drum on a Dremel tool, files, or normal HS steel end mills in the milling machine. I have never needed to use my carbide tooling to remove overflow with Devcon 10110. Same goes for Marine Tex and JB weld.

This is my 30BR 10.5 lb. gun that I did as a dedicated Group rifle, rather than a Score/Group rifle. Stan Ware fitted a .375 dovetailed recoil lug on the Panda and the stock is a Kelbly KLP. Bedding compound is Pro Bed (naturally ;)). With the pillars I made up, both a pre-bed and final bedding was done. The pic of the inlet from the top is after the initial bedding and before the final bedding. The sharper-eyed will pick out some other unique things about the bedding/pillars, as well.

The thing shot like the Hammers Of Hell  and tracked like it was on rails.

On the subject of bedding scope rings, I've found that AcraGlas Gel does a great job. It has a small amount of Nylon in it which gives just enough flexibility to conform to scope tubes (as you swap scopes around) without the brittleness of the harder bedding compounds. Relieving the parting edges with a small file is a must, also. These rings were bedded that way and have had literally a dozen scopes in them over the years.

Just my two cents worth, for whatever it's worth. Add a couple bucks to it and you can get a cup of good coffee.... ;) -Al

Only JB Weld on scope rings for me. Better grip with higher surface friction coefficient and much easier to work with.
