preppie Hunting Store manager

So I took the Family to Yellowstone last week. Saw lots of wildlife and beautiful scenery. If you have not been there I would recommend it. On the second day we saw a grey Wolf he was alone in the middle of a big high mountain meadow about 10 in the morn. Then the thought occurred to me I should have brought my FOX PRO and we could probably see a lot more stuff then we are seeing. Don’t know if it would be against the law or not but it was a good thought. The last day we were staying in Jackson hole. My wife and daughter wanted to go to the rubber hatchet stores and buy souvenirs. So I let them out and thought I will find a gun or sporting goods store. I am thinking I bet up here they probably got hunting stuff we haven’t herd of back home. If you haven’t been there it is a pretty small town and pretty touristy. Apparently more so than I realized. I got directions to one of the main sporting good stores and went in and was looking around. So in a while I ask the somewhat effeminate looking manager in the hunting “Does anyone ever call in Yellowstone just to see what might come? He got that deer in the Headlight look and said. “ Huh” I said you know varmint call? Same look. I said Predator call? He honestly said I don’t I have never heard of anything like that, Do people do that? I left there thinking He needs to be reassigned to women’s cosmetics. Should’nt there be some criteria to working in a hunting store? LOL

Like you wondered, is it even legal there? If not, why would locals know or care?

They hunt deer with dogs here(with a whole industry behind it). But where I grew up it was our duty as a sportsman to put down any deer chasing dogs. And of course we could not ever bait game beyond trapping & fishing(another industry). We did call in foxes, turkeys, ducks.

I can see how it's possible for someone to be oblivious to game calling. Depending on where they grew up.

Calling inside Yellowstone. Highly illegal but really fun if you don t hang around to long. Especially in the fall when the rut is on and there are lines of photographers with there three foot lenses. It works great.

Jackson is an outdoor-oriented ski town. Lots of hunters there too. We had elk steaks at a large restaurant that was full of game mounts. There's also a store that sells all kinds of different meat including elk and bison.

As a life long Wyoming resident and coming from Wyoming pioneer stock [homesteaders] We do not claim Jackson as part of Wyoming.. A far better shop(s) are found in the Lander Riverton area.

Here's good one. One of those Califronee billionaires bought hisself a place up there a few years ago in a nice area, to live in the wild.. As I recall some Moose came in and knocked his fence down, doing what Moose generally do, and "trespassed' on the property.. The people were insisting that game and fish do something and get the Moose out of there..

They should have directed him to the preppie sporting goods store. Maybe they sell Moose repellent. ;)

Your interaction reminds me of buying a Filson jacket from an Orvis store when they had them on clearance.

The 2 guys working there had no clue what the game pouch was or what it was used for. Maybe they were salmon colored pants specialists or something.

When was the last time you were in a fast food restaurant and the counter clerk was versed in fine cuisine or in a Walmart and got good auto repair advice from a clerk in the automotive repair section? If these folks were all expected to know their stuff - I'm sure we'd be paying for it.

You know searcher I would not expect a Walmart worker to know anything. Heck nothing outside their area in the store and only some of their area.

Now back to the rest of the story.

This manager in question was asked a hunting question and did not know. Do people really do that? Come on you never ever heard of hunters calling in game at all? I could see not knowing if it is ok, but to have not heard of calling?

I agree People

I went in thinking: Let's see up here in this area they can hunt Moose, Elk, Buffalo, Mule Deer, Big Horne sheep, White tail, Grizzley, Black Bear, Wolves, cougar, Lynx , Coyore, Badger Wolverine,Fox. Martin, Otter, Most water fowl and upland birds and on and on. When I said in the post they must have stuff we never herd of back home I was thinking this should be good. Ha Ha

I'm with you on that. Speaking of lackies, I was at Turner's this morning and inquired about whether they had any S&W 686's in stock in .357. Took 15 minutes to get an answer between 4 people. Mass confusion and zero practical product knowledge - even just to find out if they had one - and guns are their main deal. One nice gal suggested another "equivalent" in S&W 500 Mag or something like that. IT WAS A BIG MOTHER!

Thats bad when Turners isn't any better i bought a lot of guns there as a kid, They were always headed to being a fishing store. Ventura has a couple good gun stores.

Two of the only three I know of in Ventura are Uncle Pauls's (heard they are going to close) and Semper Fi (closed a few weeks ago and moving to Vegas). Also heard another is opening but heven't figured out exactly where they are.

Yeah - WD's is , I believe, the store which used to be Uncle Paul's - and is closing. The guy in Camarillo is about a mile form my house. His shop is up for sale as wants to retire. I see you are in Hailey. My old neighbor in the Channel Islands Marina moved there about ten years ago. You didn't live on Ravoli Street did you? I'm betting your gunshop folks are a bit more on the ball!

To bad to hear about the Camarillo store nice old guy. Well both actually. No never lived on Ravoli st. but i do go visit the beach and friends there. Hailey has a pretty solid archery/hunting store and a store that serves the tactical hoarder crowd. But you can get a Foxpro or any other call at the first one. The next town up is similar to Jackson Hole the sporting goods store is there to sell expensive clothes and such along with a guided fishing trip. Guns are a tough business everywhere especially with the internet and the big box stores not to far away.

A big box hunting store is no different then any other big box store when it comes to the requirements of employees, the first being that they are so desperate for money that they will put up with any sort of horrible hours that needs to be worked and that they do that work for the lowest amount of money possible. It is hard to get quality people like that
