Any good videos on youtube about sling shooting?

I've done FClass shooting and want to try some prone sling shooting.

I have the jacket and the sling, and have tried it on and it feels very tight. I don't know if that's how it's supposed to be, nor do I know the tricks.

Does anyone know of any decent instruction videos or info about how to set up? I've searched youtube and can't find anything.

You can have everything set pretty good and it will still feel like crap sometimes. Shooting sling requires a certain amount of getting used to it, like when karate people hit boards, their hands get toughened. So will your elbows, shoulders etc.
Dry fire a lot and get and you will get more used to it. Also, try to be as efficient as possible so you can finish your string sooner. And check this out:

If we are just talking about prone match shooting, the coat doesn't need to be tight at any point.

On the sling arm, it pads the arm and is supposed to reduce pulse beat transmission. On the elbows, it protects you during long strings. On the stock shoulder, it serves as recoil padding.

Most all will unbuckle the front except for maybe the top one or two buckles and even those are fairly loose. We unbuckle the rest and even unzip the sides. All those stiff tight fits and zippers are about the standing position and don't really contribute during the prone (or sitting). It is important to try and make things comfortable but repeatable.

The point is to be protected and comfortable for long strings, not that the coat is doing any structural work.

There are books on position shooting, and prone is included in those books. I'll try and link a few here.

Some of these don't have many words on prone, but that is unavoidable.

A good live coach is a much more efficient path, but I still recommend you do your homework.

The jacket should be snug across the shoulders. If it's loose there, the sling/rifle will drag it down the shoulder, so the sling slackens.

I agree the jacket improves comfort, but it also has a structural role. It supports the sling, preventing the sling sliding down your arm. Doing this the jacket spreads the load of the rifle across your back, so your supporting arm doesn't do all the work. That said, the jacket should not hold the shooter in place, or restrict their movement.

yes, come to the light......

What rifle/sling setup are you using? I see you only mentioned shooting prone so good odds it's not a service rifle.

Enjoy the journey and remember to have some patience. The target may be twice the size, but it will take LOTS of practice before you start pounding the center out. We had an F-Class shooter learn this lesson last year and it wasn't long before he went back to shooting F-Class.

konrads videos are good

You can also watch a lot of issf 50m prone and 3-position matches complete to observe technique.

Hold your arms out to your sides and try to cross them. If you can touch your elbows the coat is too loose. If you can't get your arms straight ahead it's too tight.

At the very least, shooting sling and coat reminds you of how pleasant f-class shooting is!

Where do you live/shoot? If you're near Utah, we'd be glad to help you. All this advice is great but seek out coaching, too. Shoot as much as you can, practice and matches. My personal opinion is that in prone shooting, it's more about shooter ability than the technical performance of your equipment and ammo. I know quite a few people who shoot both.

I'm using a Ruger Precision Rifle. I think this may not be the rifle for sling shooting. Maybe/maybe not? I have no idea.

I do have a .223 I'm building (waiting for a few parts) that I could try if the Ruger doesn't work out.

Thanks for the offer, I'm not near Utah though. I will see if I can get coaching at a local match.

RPR will be a perfectly fine rifle to start with IMO. Only thing you're really missing out on is having a handguard that is slotted for a handstop, not the end of the world.

Big reason for asking is by shooting a "match rifle" you're not restricted to the to the 1907/web sling, giving you better options.

Coming from XTC competition, moving to sling, Palma was a natural transition to make. It will take a little time to coordinate the sling, coat, glove, hat or blinders, handstop and stock settings into what is a tight, yet somewhat comfortable position. Learn to setup your mat, spotting scope, ammo box, score sheet or notebook.

Many recommend keeping your rifle in your shoulder between shots, not to break your “perfect” position. You also need to learn to load without breaking position in that genre. I couldn’t do it, I allowed my stock to come out of my shoulder which gave me a brief rest between shots as dropping the stock and rebuilding that part of the position for each shot wasn’t a problem for me. Do whatever works for you.

Practice at home w/o ammo setting up all your stuff, nothing worse then forgetting something in the 3 minute prep, rushing to get into a bad, loose position as the clock ticks away. You want that prep time to get setup and still have time to dry fire a few times.

You can change out your handguard in the future. Some people have used the white oak handguards on the RPRs and reported it to be an easy upgrade.
Shooting with an adjustable should be pretty comfortable compared to a service rifle. You might be able to get a barricade stop and wrap some tape or something to form a handstop too.
A good book you can find one kindle is rifle by launi meili. USA shooting has some videos on YouTube too.
