weatherby

how difficult is it to rebarrel a weatherby? i am asking cause all i have done is work on savages and thats simple as it gets.

i have a vangaurd in 270wsm, i like the round and am thinking of maybe having a 26" magnum contour barrel done up with just a bit faster twist on it so i can fling some heavier bullets for longer range kills, but still have the weight that i can hike the gun around hunting.

I have had several Weatherby's rebarreled and they shoot great, yours isn't really a Weatherby it is a 1500 howa which I also have had rebarreled with success ;)
Wayne.

did you do the work or did you have a smith do it?

if i could do it my self i would like to, but if this is one of those projects that should be done by a smith ill have to get in line here in town

i just had an idea. i dont know how practical it is, but what if i took the vangaurd i have now and either did a small diameter barrel in either 24 or 26" and kept it real light? i like the weight the gun is now it just has a burris fullfield 2 on it, i dont mind the scope its clear and works well on this gun. if i did the 24" would i be loosing or hindering the performance of the wsm case or could i still push heavy bullets at some decent speeds or do i need that extra 2" to try to maximize the round?

i have a savage i did up with a 26: magnum contour barrel for a 243 ai and i think it is capable of being carried around hunting and deffinately capable of making long shots. weight wise i think they are comparable rifles.

can anyone explain the steps to switching barrels on this action. if it is something i could do i would like to

My smith says he can't rebarrel my Howa/Weatherby Vanguard because the barrel threads are metric. His lathe does not do metric. So, be sure you can before attempting.

BTW, he refuses to call it a Weatherby, because it isn't.

Going out on a limb here but I would assume that someone wanting work and or info NINE (9) years ago has either already had it done or gave up on the idea.
