Weighted Follow Rest

I've been following this thread, and I wonder...strictly for the purpose of dealing with chatter (not deflection away from the tool) which type of rest is most effective, a follower or a fixed position support. Stan, I'm assuming your support is stationary throughout the contouring process?

Just curious, that's all. Not thinking of contouring barrels. I do however find myself called upon to do other types of lathe work.

Drop down to a small radius insert. Less surface to help keep Chatter down. Kennametal makes a nice 35° insert(vngp I think) with a small 1/64 radius. The geometry on it is nice and sharp and cuts good on stainless.

My first two barrels I made for my Elisios. I have a chatter free process that I am very happy with, and I am pretty sure my new vertical sanding grinder will very make short of work of these anyway.

I have been laying the insert back 45 degrees and that got rid of most of the chatter. The worst chatter is by far keeping the insert at 90 degrees.

The best weighted steady I have seen was a simple system which used a flat cast iron bar which was hinged to the base and rode on top of the barrel. On the bar was a pot which was filled with lead shot. The lead absorbed vibration. It really worked well. WH
