Weighted Follow Rest

I did my first two. Second one was pretty excellent if I do say so myself. This the skinny end.

A follow rest would make it much easier. I spent about two hours on this one. Changing the tool cutting angle made the chatter pretty much disappear. I used the steady and did it in three stages.

What is your rate per hour?

I'm not really sure how or what you are trying to add to the discussion about a follow rest.

I'm still waiting on the contact info for this $40 contouring company btw. Since tool movement is still kind of a fixed thing, I'm assuming they have about a $30 rate, plus no set up fee? That is pretty darn cheap.

I've gathered by your posts that you were in the business. Just curious as to your rates as you quoted time to do the job, fair enough?

We are contouring now out of necessity not out of love of contouring. I can get uncontoured blanks drop shipped. Contoured blanks are 14 weeks.

Right now my labor is considered in "apprenticeship".

Sorry that i even mentioned it. Buying around 200 barrels a year may get me a better rate. You should be able to get a pretty good rate from your barrel supplier. It only takes a few minutes to contour one with the right equipment

A few minutes? Really... I would like to see that!!!

So, you don't have a $40 barrel contouring company? I thought I was missing something here that there was a company out there that will contour your barrel for $40.

Oh, you are saying that contouring is coming from the barrel manufacturer? If that is case I get what you are saying now.

Yah... I already knew that....

Like I said only contouring due to extreme time constraints. Not love of contouring... so any help about CONTOURING would be great. Thanks.

Yes other barrel companies will take your uncontoured blank and profile it. Im not talking about when you buy it. There will be a visitor maybe to this thread that will contour a barrel for you. Im not going to give you his price ill let him do it but i pointed him here if he wants to do barrels for you. Just trying to help you out without volunteering other people’s equipment.

If you can find this book it shows how to make a pneumatic follow rest for tapering barrels. Its pretty expensive but has good info in it.

Dusty,

If any one is interested https://www.hobby-machinist.com/threads/mark-stratton-book.40670/page-3
That price www.bundukibooks.com.au is Australian Dollars Roughly $285 Ozzie shipped to the USA
They were roughly $80 USD + Shipping in the USA a few years ago - 2017.
Look in hobby Machinist thread and see if his details are still valid and whether he has any copies available.

Cheers
Michael

I really want to understand yours and other responses here.

I have essentially been chastised every time I have even mentioned contouring my own barrels (by more than a few people). I have posted before about this desire and that is kind of more than a few responses. The inference being that it is a total waste of time compared to the person that will do it in a "few minutes" for $40 bucks (because that is what you do and others do if you need a barrel contoured). But this guy is some kind of secret guy? So, I'm a newbie for even considering contouring my own barrels because I don't know the secret guy.... who would do it for $40... if I actually knew who he was (which apparently everyone knows but me)... and he wanted to do it... and were available. Or some other guy... but I don't know him either.

Is that about right? Or am I missing the love here?

I admit the whole exchange has left me perplexed. Either way, it's a gunsmithing forum. I was trying to get help doing the work because I never met the $40 guy.

Ps: To the secret guy, or any other contouring guy. I would love some $40 dollar contouring if the turn around time is short. That would be awesome!!

I've never had Stan contour a barrel for me but from what I've read on this forum he's your secrect guy. As far as the $40 contour cost, I'll leave that up to you and him to figure out.

I have a signed copy. Pretty sure I bought it directly from him. Says Copyright Summer 2004 First Edition.
