Can the brass thumb screw that comes with a Hornady comparator be used in place of the SS set screw?

Yes - It was designed with that intent in mind. The brass thumb screw threads and the threads in our caliper base are the same.

I bought this base couple of months back and it makes measuring CBTO so much faster and precise.

I have ywo of these and have replaced the small allen screws with thumb screws. If I remember correctly it is 6-32 thread.
These bases work AWESOME. !!
