IMR 4320

I've been using IMR 4320 for a number of years and am very happy with it. The problem is, it isn't offered anymore. Any suggestions as to a powder that is similar, or actually used a powder to replace it in their loading?

My lots of 4320 were exactly on top of Varget, both burnrate and produced velocity. That's not super helpful since Varget is unobtainium most of the time. Shooters World Precision has also been good for me and is close but maybe a touch faster burnrate. Shooters World Long Rifle is a touch slower burnrate but faster than any of the 4350 variants. IMR-4046 is a little faster than everything mentioned and one of my all time favorite powders. All my smallest groups in many different rifles and cartridges, from 223 up to 30-06, were shot with IMR-4064... uhhh ... I meant to say that IMR-4064 is terrible and you definitely won't like it :p

Dang!! I've got an eight pound keg of the 4320 with an unbroken seal; from the seventies I think. Also a couple of one pounders. I haven't used it a lot, but I like it with what I've done, and I guess it may be one of my standards for awhile. Who know if we'll ever see powder on the shelves again?? jd

New load work-up for sure, but imr 4166, varget, h4895, or 4064 are all right in that zone.

Let me know if you'd be willing to sell the 1lb.

IMR4320 = Accurate 4064
What cartridge, or is this across the board like H110/296?

I have had a few powders over the years show exactly the same results in the same cartridge. Yet change calibers, bore size and bullet weight and they are very different.

I did not have a lab to measure various pressures. So I don’t “assume” much as we all know the results of that.

I was doing a lot with a 25-06 some years back. AA3100 was “the” powder. I was told by several it was the same as XXXX powder. Maybe in their rig, but it darn sure wasn’t in mine, speeds and accuracy were wayyyy different. I found enough to load up a good amount of ammo for that 25-06, then called it good.

I am still Going through all of the supplies that a friend left behind and came across a 25 LB case of 4320 and around 8,000 Remington Small Bench Rest primers. I am pretty well supplied on powders for most of the stuff I load but may have to work up some loads in 223 and 243 for some of this powder and these primers. The case is still in its original box and all one lot. Not really sure what he was planning on using it for and found no partial or empty cans.

I'll give you my recommendation, but pretty much all the powders in the burn rate you desire will be having availability issues, so you'll need to be flexible and stock up with what you find and make it work. I would try some VihtaVuori N-140. My 225 Win. likes it, and I was using IMR4064 with good results. I purchased 2 lbs. from Whiddengunworks when it became available. I must say that I am highly satisfied with the price and service too. Last Saturday I shot a 3 shot group at 100 yards with an extreme spread of .209. Hornady 52 gr. hpbtm #2249. This is with a '64 Model 70 sporter I bought at an auction. Well used and fairly neglected. For my first centerfire rifle I picked and obsolete one to bid on, and that sent me down the handloading rabbit hole. Good thing there is a forum like this down here with so much knowledge to pick up on! My 2nd choice would be Alliant Reloader 15. This powder is like short cut and will get through the funnel better than the IMR4064 and VV N-140. Ultimately, you will just have to experiment and see what your barrel likes. In the meantime, t would be nice if you could find a friend with something you could try and test to verify it's performance before you commit to buying, whenever, whatever becomes available.
