New USMC rifle qualification.

in "75 when I was at PI, the army at the time was using "electrinic targets" hit them they went down, hit the gravel in front of them they went down. hope this does not go that way. I'm with the other guy, 500 yards with peep sights 55 grn FMJ in a worn out Viet Nam era M16A1 at a dog target.

That's why I like and shoot the NRA High Power matches. Very similar to the Marine qual course. I've used an M1 Garand, M-14 (not M1A), bolt action match rifle and now ARs in service and match configuration.

I guess I'm an old timer. Went through SD starting January 68. Issue rifle was an M-14. I got a really nice Winchester manufacture. We shot 147 grain LC at Edson range, 200, 300, and 500 meters.
I think we shot 200, offhand,10 shots
200 rapid sitting on 2 targets, 10 shots
300 sitting slow fire, 10 shots
300 prone rapid on 2 targets, 10 shots
500 prone slow fire, 10 shots
I never had an M-16 in my hands until I went through Staging Bn at Pendleton in late 69. When I got to RVN, I was issued an M-16 that didn't have a forward assist. Pretty sure it was one of the early ones with the 3 prong flash suppressor.

I was a Primary Marksmanship Instructor in the Marines. I'm all for the the additional training, but like posted above, there still needs to be the 2 week training, 1 week snap in and 1 week live fire for basic marksmanship fundamentals and yearly qualification. Then do the additional training.

This is very good news. I shot Edson range with M16A2 with M855. Then Okinawa where the course of fire changed to 65rnds and hit or miss. I became a range coach for my battalion in Okinawa where I worked the range and would SCUBA.

I would say drop the loop sling snapping in stuff. One can learn the practical shooting fundamentals with the ACOGs or LPVOs. Maybe a 200yd BUIS string of fire, but iron sights really suck for practical shooting.

Early 70s Ft Wood M16 A1. knew we were hitting electronic pop up targets. Just the opposite sensitivity not light enough for the faster velocity. We would have called it cheating to use optics back then.

The article said the initial training would remain the same for recruits and officer candidates.

Thought this might interest the group as I am sure there are some old, and new jarheads in here.

Adam0321, I am a fellow 0321. I served at 1st and 3rd Recon, 77-85.

I say keep the 200, 300, and 500 known distance qualifications using the prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing positions. Add another week of shooting the new course. Use both to determine if they qualify as marksman, sharpshooter, and expert. The extra week will be a welcome break from all the sitting around that many Marines do.

As some have said, what we all remember of rifle qual will remain largely unchanged for ELT, entry level training. One of the reasons that the grass week went away from the ranges/MTU, is that the intent was to put the ownership of marksmanship back at the feet of the unit commander. I will tell you after running this COF for two years, we are seeing a lot less experts. Marksmanship in the USMC has been largely unchanged for decades. But now, we are starting to evolve. ARQ will be the standard COF for all forces. But the infantry and other close combat units will also conduct what is known as AMTP/IMA. Or, advanced marksmanship training program and individual marksmanship assessment. The COF includes robotic moving targets, hit factor scoring, and recoil drills.

You would not recognize Schwab now. I was never at 3rd, but I was at 2nd and 3rd. My last recon unit was I&I before I became a Gunner.

As a "brat", I spent the first 17 years of my life in the USMC. My father enlisted in 1951, and retired in 1982. I lived in Iwakuni from 74-78 and had a great time growing up there. I did have the opportunity to shoot at the famed Edson Rifle Range in 2017, and loved it (I grew up up a few miles north of Camp Pendleton, outside the gates of El Toro MCAS & Tustin MCAS):
