Case head separation?

What do you think? Is this case head separation? These are 6.5 x 47 Lapua, and have been reloaded about 2-3 times.case_head_separation?.jpg

Couldn't really feel anything using a paper clip.

Thanks!

To me it looks like warm loads that made the very base of the case expand. Meaning if you did not see these marks before sizing it simply means they are rub marks from the die reducing the base diameter.

Below are case head seperations.

I use my RCBS case mastering gauge below to check for case stretching and thinning. Its my $100.00 bent paper clip doohickey. And normally a case head separation are caused by an excessive amount of shoulder bump.

Does this cause a problem? The indication where the sizing die stopped sizing.

I've seen it on my brass too

It's never caused a problem for me with my .308 cases as I also see this on my brass and does look a lot like the indicator for case head separation. On my brass that I've reloaded a lot where a clear indication of case head separation was imminent, that indicator is well above that lower mark.

Case head separation is a problem with break open guns (TC Encore and Contender). Usually caused by bumping the shoulder back too much. Case base to ogive (CBTO) is critical and often hard to measure. In the TC's the case base it the breech. I try to keep that measurement 0.002 to 0.003. You can measure a fired case, but remember "spring back". IMHO if you go below 0 and actually cram the case into the chamber, you will have accuracy problems. My story and I'm sticking to it!

Good advise on the broken shell extractor, have something available.

FWIW: I don't have one, but I do keep a Glock plastic cleaning rod and a pistol brush in my bag. You can usually stick that in to the broken part and it'll pop right out. The angle of the bristles provides a lot of resistance with extraction ... it's like reversing a chamber brush in your barrel.
