Casting Again. One Thing Worked Out.

I used to cast 20 years ago. I quit for several reasons.

These last couple of years my wife has been shooting 9mm quite a bit and as ammo and bullets for reloading are unobtainium now, and my supply will soon begin to run out, I'm going to start casting again.

I thought, no I'm sure, I had a 5 gallon bucket full of 2 lb. lead alloy ingots. But they are nowhere to be found. Funny how that happens.

You know shipping adds a lot to the cost of lead and one must consider the total cost of the metal when deciding if casting is worth it economically. The unavailability of projectiles for reloading is a factor too so yesterday I ordered some lead alloy.

This morning I got a call from a nice lady at Roto Metals. Turns out they have a warehouse very close to my home. She asked me if I wanted to pick up the ingots and save the cost of shipping, and also save about two week's shipping time. Heck yea!

So that's one shooting related thing that has worked out! Sometimes it's not always an uphill battle.

In Magnum Revolvers (500 S&W, 45-70, 44 Mag., 357 Mag.) the cast bullet is my preference. - Good quality heat treated gas check bullets as well as medium hard with gas checks. - In anticipation of these shortages I have over 1000 pounds (life time supply) of good lead alloys and thousands of gas checks and lubes as well as the molds to see me through.

RotoMetals HQ is located in San Leandro, CA (just south of Oakland.) That's about the only good thing about living in the Bay Area right now, as far as I can tell. Not that I cast at all, but I look at their site fairly often, though I'm not sure why.

only one box of 250 per household per day bummer, emptied my cart add shipping not a good deal
It said a maximum of two when I was there. With shipping included 15.8 cents per. About the cheapest they can be found right now, I think.

I'll be casting for about 7 cents per not including whatever I lube them with.

must be selling out fast they reduced limit to 1 24 min after you looked, I stopped casting for my handguns 20yrs ago guess its time to get out the old lee lead pot see if I stored my moulds from rust and get back into it. as a young man I enjoyed casting as I got older it was easier buying bulk bullets.

Where is that warehouse located?

Still says 2 for me, it will let me buy 2 boxes of 115 and 2 boxes of 147 for 1000 total.

What kind of 44 molds do you guys have?
I have a couple I like.

Hard to beat a 255 gas checked Keith style for all around for pistols. They don’t shoot so well in lever actions without some work.

For hunting, the Lyman Devastator works well in pistols and rifles, however my favorite is a 260 WFGC from LBT. Easy to cast, very accurate, and puts big holes in whatever you shoot.

I pretty well use plain base bullets for my pistols, except for my FA 353 casull or my 308 xp100, then I sometimes use a gas check. Depends on how fast I am going to be running the bullet.
For my 44's, it all depends. A lot of my shooting is with the H&G 503 bullet design mould I got from Arsenal moulds or the Lyman 429421 design. In my leverguns, its a 240gr rnfp. In my 44 special, its usually a 200gr rnfp from a Lee 6 cav. mould or I sometimes buy powder coated bullets from Chey-cast bullets out of Cheyenne, WY.
