22LR SK match ammo

Started my dive down the rimfire hole today. While trying out different ammo manufacturers I noticed SK brand had some sort of slippery hog snot on them. Anyone know what it is what it’s for? Thanks

It's AstroGlide. Lets the bullet slide down the tube easier with less bullet left stuck to the barrel. Less friction and less leading. Very important in a rimfire. If you are buying Eley the bullet will be coated with KY. Different ammunitions have different formulations of lube. Top secret stuff.

Hog snot huh? It's bullet lube. All lead .22lr bullets have some sort of lube on them. Copper wash, like the 'famous' Rem Golden bullets is considered lube, may have something else on them as well. Don't know, because I don't shoot them.

On their higher end brands Eley uses Beeswax/tallow mix. CCI wax. Lapua, the MFG of SK uses petroleum distillate. They have one formula for CX, Midas, and X-Act, and another for the lower end of the product line, SK, but it's still petroleum based. Hope this answers your question.

How does one effectively measure and sort ogive and rim thickens without disturbing the lube? If there is a thread on this please point me in the right direction.

From my experience yesterday it feels like there is plenty on the case that you’d be ok. I would definitely where gloves though.

that’s some funny stuff!! Thanks for the response. Makes perfect sense. With that being said, how often are you cleaning chamber/bore? Any special steps to take after shooting “special lube” ?

Tired man I am Not a died in the wool wring out the accuracy shooter. What I do is shoot three 5 shot groups with each lot of similar ammunitions' and move to the next kind/brand/lot and shoot three 5 shot groups. It seems pretty clear at that point that some groups are better/tighter than others. I might shoot 3 or 5 lots of SK Standard then several of SK Rifle Match then note the best and further test the best of the best after cleaning. I find little difference between the group size after changing ammo - after shooting the first group of the new ammo. Little changes perhaps but not much. Differences between Lapua and SK are there but just going from one to the other without cleaning and re-seasoning the barrel shows up, IMO, mostly in the first group after changing and is pretty well settled in by the third group. IMO this allows you to go through a number of lots and easily determine which/if any lots are worth looking at in your gun. If I was Really serious I might clean between say SK Standard and SK Rifle or CenterX and Midas - but I believe in a few groups you can tell if you've found the Unicorn.

I realize this is a heretical viewpoint so go ahead... burn me at the stake of public opinion....

I shoot mostly SK Std. Plus, but do shoot some Center-X. I haven’t seen the need to clean between the two and haven’t noticed any changes in group sizes.

CCI Std. Velocity is a different story. Shooting it after SK/Lapua it shoot very well for 10-12 rounds the the groups start opening up. Sk/Lapua following CCI is just the opposite. CCI uses what appears to be wax and a lot of it.

I attribute the CCI S/V shooting well after shooting the SK there is still lube from the SK bullets in the barrel and it takes a few shots to get it out, so in effect you are shooting CCI with SK lube. This is not uncommon when going from one ammo to another because of the different lubes.

I have taken 100 CCI S/V and 100 SK and put them together in a plastic bag then and shook it for a minute or two so that some of the SK lube would transfer to the CCI S/V and it tightens up the groups with CCI but does not cause any enlargement of the SK groups. But it it a pain to do this because of having to separate 200 rounds afterwards.

have you ever tried coating the cci rounds with imperial sizing wax? asking for a friend
I haven't but I have been thinking of giving it a try. I have used a large cleaning patch soaked with Gunmakers Choice (which I have been told is the same as Ballistol) to coat some and it seemed to work as well as the SK lube but I need to do some more experimenting with it to be sure.

I wonder if just spraying ballistol, or Hornady one-shot or even Dillon case lube would work. It would be possible to spray them in the plastic tray they come in.
