Air dry cerakote?

My 1903 barreled action is too long to fit in my buddies oven and I'm considering going the Air Dry route instead of helping him build a new oven. Is the Air dry any more durable than durakote? Anyone here have any longish term experience with it?

Anything thatll control the temp perfectly is what you need. Gas will do it but i doubt the burning wood would be good for the paint or temp control

Unfortunately, his shop is in the basement of a commercial building and he cannot have a propane burner down there. I may just grab some 1" foil backed insulation foam and an electric burner if its necessary.

Laminated bows are made in ovens. Generally just a plywood box with a series of incandescent lightbulbs in cheapy porcelain fixtures. Thermostat controlled. We have a cpl but too lazy to go take a pic. Look'm up on the web,easy to find pics and build tips.

They're right handy to have around for a variety of heating chores but are by no means the final word on the subject. Heck,a car with the windows rolled up in summer makes a nice oven. Your attic ain't bad either. Lots of ways to skin this cat.

Storage; if you make a hot box,leaving it horizontally will see it as a magnet for clutter(biggest reason for no pics of ours). But you usually can find a vertical spot for it. And use it in that orientation or,move it to use laying down then put it back.

Insulated stove pipe makes a great oven for hanging barrels.
Hot plate on the bottom, a lid and a hook inside to hang stuff...
Cured tons of Brownells shake and bake using one...

Perfect timing on this post. Just finished(minutes ago) cooking another barreled action.

I've been using plain old Rust-Oleum for decades and I'll put my finish up against any other non-plated finish out there. It's more about your prep than the paint you use. I use 3 light coats of Painter Touch 2X these days. I always rough blast with coal slag and spray down with brake cleaner before painting. I used to cook them in the oven, but my last 2 assembled builds were a little too long for the oven.

2 or three sections of aluminum dryer vent pipe and a hairdryer. Easily reaches 160-170 degrees. I do not leave it unattended and I don't run it for more than 20-30(max) minutes at a time though, since it's just a hairdryer. I usually do 2 heat cycles.

I personally like my barrels cooked to a nice medium rare. : - )

Proper cerakote is 250°F/120 minutes. Light bulbs and hair dryers aren't going to get it that hot.

I may look around for some kinda junk/scrap to make a box.

My heat gun and some double walled pipe would, but I don't need that much heat for my finishes.

Well, I found a 10" by 60" piece of heavy wall vacuum ducting in scrap at work, looks like I'm going to be making an oven. I think the pink fiberglass insulation wrapped around the outside should be enough. Thoughts?

You’re prob wanting something right away but Stack On Safes are cheap..... I should buy a bigger oven now but my Dad helped me build this it was a cool project we did together so I keep on using it!
I included a list of parts for the controller

I used an old gym locker and insulated it. It works well.

The safe and locker ideas are great, but I'm not the one doing cerakote or have the rest of the equipment to do it, so at this point the cheaper the better. Ill find an electric smoker element or hot plate, make a couple lids for this ducting, drill some holes for hanging racks and insulation. Call it done. The more stuff I can scrounge up from scrap the better.

I have used both heat and air Cerakote. Both work very well on firearms. The only down side to air dry is the wait time. Air dry is stronger then heat dry when it comes to being exposed to high temps. I find it easier to work with and has less waste. Another down side, i guess, would be not being able to mix for a flat or high gloss finish like you can with the heat dry. I refinish a set of truck rims about 6 yrs ago in black and have yet to have any chipping or scratches if that shows the durability of it. I do not have any experience with duracote to be able to tell you which is better. All that said, I have no issues using it.

Yes...... 1” insulation Board then 5/8 Fire Rated Drywall, cut a vent in it as well.
