Shocking Anti-Rust Product Test!

I just read over the test of anti-corrosion elixirs on the site. Awesome test. It included some stuff I aleady use, BreakFree and Eezox, and some products I'd never heard of, Corrosion-X and FP10.

They did some very ruthless testing with a salt-spray solution. Having myself seen how quickly a gun can rust in just a couple of hours, I salute the folks that ran this test. I won't spoil the fun--you have to read the article yourself--but I will say, don't count on automotive motor oil to do the job:

There's also a good link where you can buy dessicants for about a twentieth of the cost in most gun stores.

Thanks Riverine,

Let me introduce myself.....

I am Andy, from South Carolina. I am the person responsible for the testing and writeup for the "Corrosion Test".

I originally posted this test on two other gun forums, and was contacted by your webmaster and asked if I would allow it to be posted on the 6mmbr site. I gladly agreed and your webmaster did a great job of getting it posted to the site.

If anyone has any questions or comments on the tests I would be glad to hear them.

Just wanted to register here and make myself available to all the members that may read the article.

Well, Andy, thanks for all that work. :thumb: You'd think maybe one of the zillion gun magazine that cost $6 an issue now would do something like that, but I've never seen it.

And I know your testing was pretty aggressive, but I don't think it's too harsh. My brother has a Colt New Frontier, beautiful blue and case-hardened gun. He'd always wipe it down with a oily rag after handling it, but he must have left a couple fingerprints--one on the hammer and one on the topstrap and hammer, He put the gun in a foam Doskocil case,BAD idea--foam attracts/retains moisture). Three weeks later the gun was badly pitted on the topstrap and hammer--you could see his "prints" clear as day. So much for a rag with RemOil. That little mistake took about $150 off the value of the gun...

It would be interesting to work out a "fingerprint test" on some blued steel--maybe cut some sections of a shot-out barrel.

Interesting,
Fred Smith from Bullberry sent me a Eezox sample with a barrel I ordered from him. I tried it but quit using it during the hunting season because of the very strong odor. After reviewing Andy's test results I will surely apply it to my firearms at the end of the season.
Thanks for the test and the posting of it here.
If this is repeated it would be nice to see how Kroil holds up.

Oil based products ultimately attract dust which attracts moisture. This is particularly true in the hot humid area of Florida I live in. I use Renaissance wax developed by the British Museum to protect armament and suits of armor from corrosion on both wood and metal surfaces of my guns. I also use Eezox as a lubricant because it dries as a non oily film. Perhaps other products work, but I know for sure these two work for me and are all I need.

I wasn't surprised to see Rem oil do poorly in the 46 product corrosion test. I have had bad results with it as well. After reading that test I am going to try the Hornady One Shot or WD40 Specialist. Both seem pretty impressive from those results. I'm glad this thread was brought back. This is my first time seeing it, being that I was barely out of high school when this was originally posted. Makes me wonder if there are even better products out now.

SEM = Sunny's Electric Marine Corrosion X three thumbs up, Just not on my guns, For the last 25 years the only anti corrosion product we use in the shop, Just wish they would not have added such a strong oderizer and kept the pump up bottles then it was not bad on the lingering odor, In the aerosol cans once the butane propellant evaporates no longer flammable real important for me, most boat owners DONT read warning labels, It will penetrate rust very well just given it it's time to work and will prevent all but extreme salt water and battery acid corrosion issues again boat owners need to read, On my guns I use Tetra's Light Cleaner Lube no strong smell in the house works very well and in the pump spray (well spritz) no propellant to inhale it does dry to an extant unlike Corrosion x, They have added CLP to the Tetra cleaner it I think is what remains not quite dry. It also does a great job on removing carbon in and out of the bore

I sprayed a single barrel shotgun with Hornady one shot, propped it up in the corner of my hay barn for three months with two doors open. I live in a high humidity part of the country. Amazingly, no rust on the shotgun!

high humidity part of the country.
That sir is an understatement! (where you live). I worked there in 2016 for a month or 2 (July and August) and by 11AM each morning I was done, couldn't take the heat but nice thing was a 6AM appointment wasn't out of the question for most folks. Climbing on a roof at noon was a no no.

Eezok has worked for me ever since I read the test years ago.I have killed quite a few bucks since with it the various rifles. I nver tboght it had a strong smell at all. Now Ballistol, that has a smell.

When you see the results in that test of the two best products, how much better might you expect?
