Small base die options

Not sure if there is any, I can’t find one, for a saum case. Is there another one made for another chambering that will work, like the 308 sb die for a br. Or is it custom die only?

thanks!!

I have a 7mm SAUM. I could only find the FL dies. What I found was that the web just forward of the case head was being sized down 0.0015 when the shoulder was bumped 0.002. When sized this way I have 0.002 clearance 0.03 from the top of the ejector cut with (qualifier here!) my chamber.

The way I found this was shooting a case 3 times only resizing the neck area with the same FL die - no shoulder bump - and measuring my chamber dimensions from the brass. After writing all of these down I fully resized the case with a 0.002 shoulder bump and measured again.

This works fine for me, I use a FL die on each load. RCBS dies if you are curious.

Small base dies size the base of the case a little smaller than a standard FL die. They are intended for AR's and other autoloaders. If reliability is critical or your weapon is full auto capable they are a must.

Hey! Yeah I guess I’ve never measured on mine. I have “s” dies and fl/nk dies. I’ve yet to have a problem with my saum, but I occasionally run my br/xc/308 through a sb die when you get clicks. So, I thought I’d be proactive on my saum. Rather than looking for one when I need one. Might never need one, but that’s never stopped me from buying a tool. I figured I’d call Redding and they could probably hook me up, if new york is allowing them to go to work.

And clearing up clickers......

I had a wild cat made by necking 7 saum down to 6.5 using Redding S die. Try a no go gage to see if your chamber is sized correct. My s die is a long way from the ram.

Jd,

Brownell's has 7mm RSAUM body dies. You may be able to find something from Redding directly if you call and ask them to measure the diameter of ones they have in stock.

Right, I use a +10 or 8 shell holder with my s die to bump my shoulder .002. So what I’d like to avoid is having to bump the shoulders back .012 when trying to size down on the case head farther. I use a 308 sb die on 308 and br or anything in that family that is shorter than 308. But no saum or regular ultramag dies that I can find yet. Thanks

Yeah, Monday I will. Hopefully they aren’t locked out with the “global pandemic”

I've only ever had to use SB Dies once for an autoloader. That was when I was loading some once fired surplus brass that was fired in a machine gun. SB Dies aren't required for autoloaders. They are only required when required. Most of my reloading experience has been with autoloaders

Yes, I was lulled into believing I needed to use a small base FL die for reloading 5.56. Now I use a Redding FL bushing die and just bump the shoulder .003". My AR-15 precision .223 varmint rifle will run just fine with ammo that I load for my bolt gun that is bumped only .002" but that is probably because the varmint rig has a .223 Wylde chamber.

I have been using SB dies for 15 years in both .308 and .223.

.308 - 2 bolt guns and an auto.

.223 - bolt gun and an M4.

Never had a problem and have notice that it isn't making any changes to accuracy in any of the guns.

YMMV.

How long does your brass last?

I have tried it all for the saum case. Hornady die. Redding die. Redding body die. Nothing worked. Either custom die. Or polish the chamber out.
