464 30-30 160gr ftx little different

The problem with neck sizing your 30-30 will be extraction if the cases do not spring back from the chamber walls when fired. You may have to wait for the cases to cool off before they will extract.

I would not use neck sized cases for hunting, the 30-30 lever action rifles do not have the primary extraction that a bolt action has. The 30-30 action only pulls straight back and if the case does not spring back from the chamber walls you will have a single shot rifle.

Click on the image below to enlarge, one of my favorite expressions about full length resizing is below.

"The cartridge should fit the chamber like a rat turd in a violin case."

This is good to know, I’m glad I haven’t had any trouble however, I’ve been neck sizing out of laziness more than anything. My press is relegated to the mud room which is not heated. So I’ve been getting by with hand tools and a Lee loader. I figured I’d full length every few times to keep things legit. Maybe I’ll have to get my act together a little more. At any rate thank you for the info. Does anyone know what causes the single, then double pattern that my groups have? Is it the first initial “cold” shot, followed by two that come from a warmed barrel? Or something else?

I’m also working on another project

Many rifles will do this, and your 30-30 has the fore end, feed tube and two barrel bands contacting the barrel. And hunting accuracy when standing is being able to place 5 shots inside a 6 inch bullseye at 100 yards.

Your 30-30 is not a bolt action with a free-floating barrel and has a lot contacting the barrel. I have a peep sight on my Winchester 30-30 trapper model with a 16 1/2 barrel. And these rifles were designed for fast handling and not bench rest competition. You can try the mods at the link below and see if it improves the accuracy. The average deer in Pennsylvania are shot at ranges under 40 yards in the woods. And I have other scoped rifles for hunting in open fields.

Thanks, I’m happy with the rifles accuracy. I never dreamed of getting close to MOA out of it and it’s always done fine for deer hunting. Just was curious what caused the pattern. I’m happy with the load developed, it will be more economical and accurate than what I was using before. Most in the woods hunting around here is similar to what you describe. I also can hunt into some small fields and this rifle should do both admirably. I’m excited to build my muzzle loader and use that as well. Load development for that will be interesting.
