17-223 420 yards running coyote

The area Im hunting has been called hard. This one was my 3rd spot and stalk this season. It’s a hayfield, so getting close is tough. They have to be in just the right spot to use the “terrain” to get within range. 350 is about the closest I can get.
lead is a seat of the pants thing, it seems I have a knack for it as I have taken many coyotes on the run. Deep snow helps slow them down, and sometimes you can see hits in the snow to adjust lead.
Lead yesterday was roughly 3.5 feet in front of where I actually hit. It was running full speed, but uphill in 8 inches of snow at a diagonal, away from me.
4050 FPS muzzle velocity helps.

Wow! That's impressive. Way beyond my range of capability. Good shooting.

I try to call them in to within 250 to 300 yards, the closer the better for me. Problem is that I just dabble in yote hunting, something to do in the winter months until I can start ground hog hunting in the spring which is my first love. I just can't get enough of ghog hunting. :) :) :) :)

Also, I have an antiquated call, an old Primo's Electronic caller. The fawn distress works fairly well on yotes if they're in the area and the rabbit distress call on foxes. However getting the yotes to show themselves for a makeable shot is something else all together. Needless to say, I'm not terribly successful at yote hunting. I've gotten a few, mostly by chance during ghog hunting. However I'm quite successful with foxes, they're easy.

I only hunt during day light hours which also limits my chances. The guys I know who are really good at it hunt at night.

You are right about the "lead". When using a .17 HMR, any shot on a fast running coyote is like swinging on a bird.

Sweet--bet that was rewarding. Several years back a buddy convinced me to try a shot at a 400ish-yd. bobcat with my 17 Fireball XP-100 pistol (they're worth too much to give 'em a pass). I had dope established with my 2.5-8X Leupold Duplex reticle for that distance so decided to try it, and long-story short, it worked.

Years before that I actually skipped a 17 cal. bullet from a 17 Rem. Model 7 off a tilted rock a cat was sitting on at 400ish, and it killed it--lucky.
