If you’re going to be driving roll pins you should get a set of these “roll pin starter punches”. They’re all over eBay for $10 or less. I bought a set a few years back and say to myself “where have these been all my life!?” I made some bigger sizes myself afterwards. Priceless little punches. Lol.
ExcellentI had a little free time this afternoon so I built a “test” punch to see how it will work. Used some Dremel parts I had laying around and machined a body. No one in town had 1/16 dowels, only 3/32 so I had to order most the dowels I will need. I tried it on some trigger pins and seems to be holding well, time will tell....

Absolutely true. Standard punches for straight pins, roll pin punches for roll pins. No exceptions. If you’re going to be driving roll pins you should get a set of these “roll pin starter punches”. After messing around with the first one, yes the pin will need to bottom out in the holder. The little dremel aluminum collects just can’t hold it quite tight enough. I beat on it pretty good to make the pin slip but on the other hand I've ran into some pins that have been that tight. So does the dowel pin bottom out against anything in the holder?
I wonder just how much the quality varies or how much difference it makes between a 1/16 starret and the others. I don’t think there is enough difference to keep the starret from bending/ breaking when some of the others do. You’re right about the other size starrets — they hold up better than the others I’ve tried. After messing around with the first one, yes the pin will need to bottom out in the holder. A bit of a draw back is you are gonna need a pin 2” long in order to have enough to stick out, plus go through the collet length and then hit the bottom of the holder. McMaster Carr price for (1) 1/16 diameter 2” length pin is $4.79 but on the other hand a Starrett 1/16 punch is $6.61. The price gets better and the quality increases per package as you go up in size so 3/32 and 1/8 aren’t so bad.
