Who uses the 308 Winchester for hunting?

How many of you guys use a 308 Winchester for hunting?
Dan Ekstrom and I plan to go to the edge of the Bighorns, just north of Buffalo, outside of a little town named Story later this week to attempt to fill some doe tags.
We will be still hunting...Doing the sneaky sneak, and then in the afternoon, we will hunker down on the ground somewhere in what each of thinks will be an area where deer will be moving.
Not sure which handgun Dan will use, but I plan to take my center-grip 308 Winchester XP-100 and use some factory ammo I have one hand: Hornady TAP 168 grain (A-Max), which has a MV of 2445 fps.
I have shot this XP out to 1000 yards on steel, so I figure it should do fine to the close distances I will be hunting-Under 250 yards, with most shots closer to around 100 yards.
I set all of my pistols up with a 100 yard zero.
It will drop 5 inches at 200 yards or I could dial or use the FFP reticle at 2.5 MOA for a spot on kill.

It has a reworked stock, and it has been bedded.
I bought this off of Gunbroker as a rear grip set-up at a good price, and it turned out to be a gem.
Someone had set it up for IHMSA, so it is a lightweight XP-100, with a 14.5" fluted barrel.
Glenn (a friend from church) helped me rework a flawed stock and bed it.
They kept the original recoil lug, when chambering/fitting the custom H-S barrel, which was designed for the center-grip trigger, so all I had to do was grab a spare trigger linkage, which I had, remove the trigger that was on it, put on the center-grip trigger, and I was set!
Mac's Gunworks added one of their solid-bottomed brakes, and Chuck did some adjustment work on the trigger as well.
H-S Precision did the metal work on it, with their name on the barrel, so I am guessing they built this before they started making their HSP/pistol action.
Scope is a Burris XTR-II 3-15 with the SCR MOA reticle.

I have used 308 Win. rifles over the past 40 years to take a BUNCH of deer. I have shot them with MANY different brands of bullets from 125 gr to 168gr. They all will eventually kill a deer if you put them in the vitals. The Match bullets like Sierra Match Kings will either kill them like you set a hand grenade off in their chest or punch through like a FMJ and they run for EVER. My favorite kill them in their tracks out to 300 yards 30 cal bullet that I use in everything from my T/C Contender 14" 30-30AI up through 308 rifle is the 125 Nosler BT. Keep the impact velocity under 3000 fps and it is awesome. In the 308 I use match prepped WW case, CCI-Br2 primer, 46 grs IMR4895 and the 125 BT. Runs just under 3000 fps out of my 21 1/2" Heart barrel. Bug hole accurate. Good luck and have fun.

My 308 deer bullet is either the SST or Accubond 165gr, both deliver excellent results. I know others use the A-max, but that's a target bullet and the margin for error in an ethical kills shrinks... I highly recommend using a bullet designed for hunting game.

The only difference vs the 300 magnums is maximum distance to achieve terminal impact velocity required for effective bullet performance. Elk last year did not know which the bullet was fired from.

I've used the 308 Win for white tail deer for about 20 years in a rifle. It's an outstanding cartridge for eastern deer hunting. I used the Sierra 150 grain Pro Hunter bullet which is an effective, no frills bullet.

However, quite honestly, I found that 243 Win with 85 grain Sierra BTHP's to be just as effective with proper shot placement and at distances under 200 yards which covered 99% of my shot opportunities for deer in PA.

Sounds familiar. I use a different rifle(caliber) every year. Started out with a 338 LM improved with no takers. Ended up with the .308 win in hand on the last day of the gun season. 150 Sierra GameKing SBTs. Running around 2800 fps. One shot on a fast moving buck behind a doe did the trick. Last few minutes of the 2020 firearm season.
