284 Shehane suggestions needed

Guess 2730 out of a Shehane with a 180 was way to slow lol those slower nodes have always held a significantly tighter vertical for me at 1000. I’ve sped up to 2790 with 184’s but just got some 190’s to try.

I'm gonna send my 7mm-08 reamer over to you, it'd be more efficient for what you are doing.:p:p Naw, it can't get you quite up there!! Otherwise, you may be proving that there is little credibility to the powder density theory with the Shehane.

As I have said, I shoot 3- 284 Shehanes well the 3rd one I just pick up and was doing load testing for and I somewhat know what my rifles like so here is one test with 3 rds ea at 2.502 seating about .016 into the lands. I know I know everyone shoots the with a jump but for me it doesnt work, I have tried. IMG_0516.PNGshots 4,5,6 has a nice horizonal and so does 10,11,12 but the crono number where better with the upper node. Also same POA and did not hold for any wind as you can see. After this test I went to 53.0 and 53.2 of the same powder H-4350 and they shot well but more vertical, so I picked 52.8 as a load and now off to do a seating test in which I already know I am there or very close and then a tuner test if the ranges ever open up again

Firstly I would like to say sorry for the Hi-Jack of this thread, Secondly for poor forum conduct by reviving an old thread. Appologies to the OP.
I Feel it is not necessary to start a new 284SH thread as there are allready a bunch.

I also need some suggestions on a 284SH. I have done a fair bit of research and it seems 4350,4831SC,N560 and some Alliant RL powders are popular and I wont make a mistake by electing anyone of those to shoot 180s out of a 28" tube. But my real question is why isnt anyone using Norma MRP? I hopped on QL and from all the possible powders that are suitable it (MRP) delivered the best numbers. Pressure and Velocity wise to be @ 2830fps. Yet no one is shooting it? What am I missing? There must be a sound reason I haven't managed to pick up...

So here is the situation and the main reason behind my question, Hodgdon, IMR and VV are all hellishly expensive where I live (South Africa), MRP is about 30% cheaper and form my calculations it is the best option to reach my target velocity of 2830fps with the lowest pressure to be easy on the brass, BUT my research suggests otherwise. Our very effective and affordable local powder (Somchem) has been out of production for about 2 years now.

If someone can clarify this that would be greatly appreciated.

As Fclass shooters (most in this thread) tend to lean toward very temperature stable powders.I'm not sure Norma MRP provides that....That said if you shoot one range constantly you may be able to manipulate the powder charges up or down to coincide with the temperature swings. Take a little work but it is certainly achievable one would think.

Try some RL23 very stable I went back to a 284 from a Shehane. I’m running 53.0 with single digits. You get good speeds with less powder then 4831sc. I also use the same powder in my 300WSM.

I should be able to chime in here a little bit more over the next couple of weeks. Just got my first Shehane barrel chambered up, it's a 32" Krieger, 4 groove, 8.5 twist, straight contour topped off with an EC tuner. Brass used will be Peterson and I loaded up 99 rounds today with 49gr of RL16 and Berger 168gr VLDs, just for fireforming at an indoor range to run the barrel in and get a feel for it. Whilst I have no idea what this load will do velocity wise. I also loaded up 3 different primers, ranging between CCI BR2s, RWS and S&B. Interestingly S&B were noticeably firmer to seat, suggesting the primer is a bit fatter and the other two which felt about the same. Given I'm running the same powder charge and seating depth, it will be interesting to see if the different primers have much of an effect on ES/SD.

Ultimately I'll be running Berger 184s but they're a couple of weeks away from getting a run.

1st year shooting 1k benchrest at Williamsport, finished 13th in heavy. The gun is better then the shooter so far....getting the hang of it....I’m at about 1800 rounds, getting a new barrel spun up as we speak....Now that the load development is pretty much done I can concentrate on my technique and wind calls more...love the Shehane

A brief update on this thread...I've got about 450 rounds down the barrel on my Shehane and ended up settling on 54.3gr of 2213sc (H4831sc). This is giving me 2840fps with 184gr hybrids, ES of 10 over 10 shots and an SD of 3. It's holding 1/4 moa vertical at 800 metres. Peterson brass is holding up extremely well, with 29 cases I'm using for club shoots 9 times fired and primer pockets all very tight - it's a light load but such is the accuracy, I see no reason in climbing higher and pressure is minimal.

@Willow My load is very similar except im pushing the 180gr Hyb at 2850fps with turned and
necked up 6.5x284 Lapua Brass. Hold's a tight water line @1000 and only
droped 2 points from crappy wind calls on my part the last couple times out. No need to
push them any faster for my application. I just need to work on reading the wind better.

primer used? I just ordered 200 Peterson for the 2021 season

fire form load for Peterson?

Thanks a million

I use S&B primers, which are available in Australia but I understand are not in the US which sucks for you guys. Fireform load...I had some RL16 lying around and just ran with 49gr which worked fine. If I was going to use H4831sc I'd use 53gr.

S&B primers are here. I bought mine at Cabela's about a year ago.

@Terry's...You may have some trouble getting more, from
my understanding they are no longer imported into the US....( I hope im wrong.)
I too would like to try some.
