22 Waldog

Is anybody still shooting this round? I received some ammo the other day and it looks to be an interesting round to work with. Thanks, Brad

brad6ppc, a friend of mine still shoots one...believe it or not on prairie dogs. I have personally seen him kill PD's out over 700 yds if conditions are good. It is super accurate. Not an easy case to make though. His is the .125" short version. He uses a shortened 22/250 die for a forming die. If you don't mind spending the time to build cases, it is a fun round to shoot. Everytime I see him kill a PD at a longer range...I just shake my head that such a small cartridge could do that! With the right powder it's not slow either. Actually an amazing little case.

It's going to be a long winter and it looks like it would be a fun project but I will have to find a reamer.

Here's a trivia question for you. How did that cartridge get its name? Dan Dowling did the first Waldog chamber and is responsible for giving it its name. Anybody know, or want to take a guess, where the name came from?

I believe he named it after a friend of his, Waldo G. Woodside, thus the Waldog or Waldo-G.

Correct you are. Waldo had the first .125 short 22 PPC. I'm pretty sure that I had the first .100 short 22 PPC. Both chambering's were kind of localized to Colorado, Wyo. and S. Dakota for the first few years. I think Dan did Waldos barrel in 1980 or 1981 and I did my first .100 short in 82 because I had a big lot of powder that was a better burning rate for that case length. Both cases would really shoot if you had them right.

I have a 22 waldog barrel for my panda's. Shoots extremely well. And yes forming brass is a pain. Mine is .125 short. Was always told .100 short was a talldog. Have one of those in 6mm .100 short.

Shooters, being the individuals that they are, may have called a .100 short 22 PPC a Talldog at some point in time, but the original Talldog was on a BR case.

Yes, and I believe Fred "The Scorpion" Hasecuster's Talldog 6BR case was .085" short.
