Shotgun reloading

Since hodgon discontinued IMR 4756 I've been using Alliant blue dot which burns about as good as coal. Seems that the single base powders such as 4756 burn a lot cleaner than the double based powders like blue dot.

I'm loading 1.5 oz. of shot in 2 3/4 in. active cases. Are there any single base powders suitable for heavy loads such as this?

I've never loaded that heavy a load, but a TON of 1 1/8 and some 1 1/4. Universal and Longshot have worked just fine in the heavier loads I used to load. Check Hodgdon's website for more help...

hs6 or hs7 if i recall. one of theses powders is same as w571. MAKE SURE YOU VERIFY THESE SINCE I DO NOT HAVE A LOAD BOOK IN FRONT OF ME!! PLEASE. --I always used blue dot, unless I couldnt get it--why worry about crud in a scattergun???

Go to the Hodgdon online reloading info and search a load. they have loads using 800x and Longshot that may suit your needs.

They asking shotgun now, and just think, I just got rid of 100 pounds of different powders for
$10 bucks a pound.

Hodgdon's site on line doesn't list Activ cases. I have an OLD Lyman shotshell book that lists Activ loads, and two original Activ load data pamphlets, and an OLD Ballistic Products load data book, and there is only one load I can find that is for 1-1/2 oz. I can take a picture of that page if you don't have any data at all and send it to you later today if you like.

I started using Blue Dot for 1 3/8 and 1 1/2 oz loads when Winchester dropped 571. Haven't noticed dirtiness.

I've used 4756, Longshot, 800x, 540, 571 and 2400. Nothing burns as clean as the 4756. The 1 1/2 load with 2400 was pretty clean, haven't been able to find that load for many years.

It's by no means cheap any more. I remember my first bag of $20 shot! I had buyer's remorse! I still like loading my own, I feel I can make a superior shell compared to the cheap promo stuff.

Thanks for the responses. HS-7 if I recall is suitable but double base. As far as dirtiness, just look down the barrel after shooting a round and there is a lot of unburned powder in there, not that that really matters much, but, when shooting blue dot in my autoloader it seems that cleaning the black stuff off the rod where the action stuff rides on is required way more times than with 4756.
As far as shot, I bought it many years ago, wish I would have got more back then.

I still have shot with the price on it under $20.00. My first bag of shot purchased was under $10.00 and based on the cost of money, the price of shot today (I recently bought 2 tons of Magnum shot at $33.50 a bag) would be well over what it is.

Perazziguy: You're correct with regards to 4756, it burns clean and doesn't gum up the action.

I load 34-36g of Blue Dot with the above shot charges, BP Gas seal and BP12 I think is the wad(ribbed that you slit).

Dripping from the nozzles of my Littleton Shotmaker!!!!!! Honestly, if it wasn't for that I wouldn't have any fun with my shotguns anymore....

Maybe thirty-something years ago I bought a ton of active cases from Cabelas for 2 cents apiece. New cases, not once fired. Without looking, my loads are similar to yours.
