Tell me about your short range Benchrest Rifle

Bert Rypkema is a benchrest champ and also happens to be my step uncle and coach. He sold me his Panda 6PPC he bedded and put together himself. Amazing rifle and one of my most valued posessions. The AI chassis is my swap barrel system adapted with bag riders for load dev. Its a Shilen DGR action which is nice for the savage style bolt and barrels while fitting Rem 700 stocks. Currently have a 308, 6.5x47 Lapua, and 6PPC barrel for it all Shilen select match barrels. Scope is a Sightron SIII 8-32x56.

I have 2 LV guns. One was built and competed with by Roy Hunter on a Borden 2 port in one of his stocks with a black Farley Hare trigger. There is a pic of Roy with the gun if you do a search for Hunter stocks......It has a name....Marley......You will understand when you see the stock. I bought it because it was/is a winning platform. I added the trigger and a March 50 with offset rings.
The other ( back-up ) is a Leonard stock with an older 2 port Farley action & Jewell trigger that I got from a shooter with a handful of barrels. It is a real shooter as well. I added a March 36-55 EPZ I had here and offset rings and it makes weight.
I have a Rail here I got from a local guy in Pa. The platform was built by Ulrich, it was without a barreled action. I got one from a guy out west built on a Bat 3 lug 2 port 1.75 round with a 1.45 barrel. I added a Weaver 36 sitting in a set of Jewell rings. This setup hammers and I use it mostly as a toy for helping me to read the wind.
These 3 guns are all chambered off my Henriksen reamer 262 neck 45 FB that was specked and purchased for me by Sid Goodling...........I have a few other rifles, but the ppc's & 30 Major are what I enjoy the most by far.

Regards
Rick

This is my LV 6PPC built on a early vintage Farley that I converted to a drop port. It is in a Scoville Stock.

The green Rifle is my 30 BR HV, also a early vintage Farley, only a Left/right no eject. the stock is a Robertson.
I also have a HV built on a Bat Neuvo in a Robertson Stock. I switch barrels on it from 6PPC to 6BR.
All three rifles have March High Master 48x scopes and Bix and Andy triggers. The tuners are my own.

You'll have to take a ride in the Way Back machine for this one.
40XBR action
Shilen barrel 21.75 long Chambered for the 6 BR. original spec. 1.510 case length .266 neck.
Hart 2 oz trigger
Glued into a 1979 Lee Six SPG 40x stock
Leupold 36x scope in Bushnell rings.
This was on the low end of state-of -the- art in 1980. Most rifles were based on a Remington of one sort or another with custom actions from Shilen, Hart, and Wichita making the occasional appearance; along with individual customs made and used by various skilled hobbyists.
This rifle of mine is no different than what I shot back then and it shoots well enough that I can avoid having to slink away after the match and, occasionally, even get some sort of award (usually a hearty handshake and an "atta boy"). In truth, I don't shoot short range BR very much anymore and, if I was real serious, I would upgrade! WH

Thanks for the great post.

Any thoughts on the questions?

What I currently use is also my answer to your second question.

Bat DS melonited. Scarbrough stock. Krieger or Bartlein barrel. Bix trigger. Valdada 36x or Nightforce 42x lightweight scope. Thats for 10.5lbs but I don't think I would change much other than possibly the scope if I were to build a 13.5lb gun.

Are you competing or wanting to build a rifle that would be legal to compete with? More details please.

I shot UBR this year with Modified and Unlimited rifles.
Thinking of a Custom class rifle (13.5lb).

I shot the first UBR 100-200 match. It was with a 6mmbr and 30br. Times have changed in short range br. I think records are held with 6ppc still, but 22br, 22 beggs is now my favorite choice in matches. I shoot all 22 beggs, 6ppc, 6br, 30br, all are good. I shoot custom 22 beggs and 30br in unlimited. My sons shoot 6ppc and 6br in both custom and unlimited. Depending on the crowd you are shooting with, all are good for short range UBR.
All I can say l, depends on the day and the driver which will be at the top. Agian, I think most record are held with 6ppc.
Scopes on all rifles are nightforce 12-42.

Pull up the equipment list from the Nationals or the Rattlesnake. If anyone is lying on that list it's because a rifle was subbed because something went wrong with the starter. What Dusty said is what you'll find except there are a lot of Scoville and Leonard stocks being used.
