Pre-64 M-70 bottom metal for H&H length action

I'm planning a build with the subject action in 300 Win Mag with an OAL of 3.7 inches for longer bullets. Spoke with Swift Blackburn today about their one-piece magazine/trigger guard and theirs requires welding up the front action screw hole and redrilling /tapping it one-hole diameter forward. Beside going with a blind magazine – does anyone know of other options that don’t require major action modifications? Wondering if I should look for a magnum Mauser action rather than using a model 70 which I haven’t bought yet.

I believe the mag box length for the 300 and 375 H&H rounds allows a 3.7" OAL. That's what I'd like to use for my 300 win mag build so I'm not seating heavy bullets deep into the case body.

If you are going an with an "old school" action, what about a M1917 Enfield. They can be modified to accept these with a little bit of finesse.

I did one a few years ago in 338 RUM, I think I took the mag well out to that 3.7-3.75 range.

I have one in 416 Rigby. I have an extra Duane Wiebe bottom metal assembly with a custom machined follower.

You can use a pre-64 action that was originally in .300 or .375 H&H. The magazine box for them is 3.7 OAL. They are simply the standard long action especially machined for the longer cartridges and supplied with a longer box. No need for any different t/g & f/p. A good machinist can copy the Win. conversion and you'll need a longer box, which is not hard to find, but the machine work may be costly. BTW, the FN magnum actions for the .300-.375 H&H calibers were also just their standard actions opened up for the longer cartridges and supplied with a longer box. Quite a few shooters have made up custom .300 Win. rifles on the M70 .300-.375 actions for the same reason you stated. You can also use the M70 Classic actions, which were made longer on purpose so that not much was needed in order to accept the H&H length cases, including .330 Wby. and 7 STW.

Thanks,

Thats some very useful information. Thanks to all who have offered help and suggestions.

I would be inclined to use a M70 Classic or the later BACO action rather than the pre-64. It fits the full length cartridge better. The pre-64 is a great action and I really like them but I don't think they are ideal for the H&H length cartridges. WH

I understand the historical and classic appeal of 375 H&H, but maybe it would make sense to look at the 375 Ruger, ballistically a twin, in a shorter package. Granted it does not have the history of satisfactorily killing all animals on the African continent, but not a bad cartridge for a late comer.
