win 30-30 loads

I like 3031 powder and 150gr or 170gr bullets. I figured out early on why it's called 3031... 30grs with the 170 bullets, 31grs with the 150 bullets.
Exactly. Those two loads are the historical standard in this cartridge.

I abandoned the 150's early on. There just isn't enough velocity gain to make any real and usable difference in trajectory, so you might as well have the extra sectional density for penetration. Plus, it has seemed to me over the years that more rifles (especially Marlins)favor the 170 grain bullet as far as accuracy goes.

Leverevoloution Powder is excellent in the 30-30. 150's can be worked up to the 2500 fps range with safe pressures. I wouldn't sweat the 150 170 thing. Both work fine. My favorite for deer is the 150. If I were hunting large Hogs with the 30-30 the 170 could get the nod.

This for all the replies. I choose a 150gr bullet, and ordered dies. Should be here late this week. I have a few powders you all mention on hand, I am going to give those a try.

Thanks!

Has anyone had any success at getting the Hornady 160 gr. FTX bullet to shoot well in their 30-30. I've tried the whole gamut of W-748 powder loads and experimented with reduce bullet jump (not crimping) and can't get these things to shoot worth a darn in my 94 Winchester with a 26" barrel. I tested with W-748 for two reasons: 1) the Lyman 50th Edition reloading manual listed W-748 as the potentially most accurate power with the Hornady FTX, and 2) I have a good supply of W-748. And, right now, powders seem hard to find on the shelves. I've read on some forums where some have gotten good results with the Hornady FTX, and others have had the same lousy experience I've had. Some have commented that ones rifle either likes them or does not like them, and there seems to be no gray area. If anyone has gotten the Hornady FTX to perform well in their 30-30, what powder did you use?

I didn't get the FTX to shoot in my Marlin 336 (20") until I stopped the 748 and switched to AR-COMP when it all came together.

Historically though, the Marlin and my T/C Super Contender (14") much preferred the Remington Core-Lokt 170 grain. Accurate to the point of being the first time I ever bought factory ammunition to hunt with without reservations. Granted the range was limited to under 100 yards usually due to the dense woods but that combination provided a lot of venison for the winter months.

The load I use in my M94 is 33 grs IMR4320, cci 200, 170 gr Hornady FP in a Win case. crimped with a Lee FCD. Great die for this. Vel is 2021 ft/sec in my 20" barrel. Works good in my rifle.

I have had such great success with the Speer 170 grain FNSP, chased by a good load of
Leverevolution powder that I have not pursued anything else.

It works superbly in both my Marlins, a 336 Carbine [20"] and a 336A rifle [24"]

Since this thread is 12 years old I assume that the OP found her load long ago and doesn’t need any more advice. Gotta lol at responses like “I think I used to use 2400 powder” etc., but their heart’s in the right place....

I always loaded a 150 round nose. Can’t remember powder or load, as it’s been a while. Fun little round. For some reason, 3031 rings a bell. I still have my Granfather’s Winchester 55.
I have a single-shot Henry. I tried a bunch of hotter loads with pointy bullets and gave it all up. I went back to a max load of 3031, over factory seconds 150-grain round-nose bullets. It shoots great out to 200 yards. I killed a half dozen big mulie does and a couple white tails with it out to 168 yards. I had zero complaints about performance on the deer. I never caught a bullet.
