Hornady HPBT match bullets

I heard a rumor that Hornady is going to drop the 6.5mm, 140gr, HPBT Match bullets.

Can't find anywhere even on the auction sites.

Anyone have any info on this rumor?

yes, I am aware of the shortage of reloading supplies.

If this is true then I need to find another that I can use for long range shooting.

I bet it’s all going to loaded ammo right now. Hornady loads this bullet in the American Gunner and Hornady Black, both being sold out as fast as they hit the shelves.

For some reason Berger, 140 Hybred target just does not work with my gun. I have tried them with different jumps and the Hornady's work the best for me.
I have a friend that shoots the same Savage model as mine and swears by Sierra. It may be we get used to shooting a certain brand and then maybe we are actually getting better.

I have no insider information at all but it seems that Hornady from time to time stops production on certain bullets for a while and then resumes later, probably due to production capacity and demand.

I have found a certain Hornady bullet I really like and for a couple of months it could not be found anywhere, and I mean anywhere. Several on line sources even said no backorder. At this time however they seem to be readily available again both at my local shop and on line.

And of course the current demand for loaded ammo is a factor right now too I'm sure.

just a possibility, my 6.5 likes the target vld's and the hunting vld's(these are better). still shoots the hybrids good to though. just a thought and of course, ymmv:)

I live about 40 miles from the Hornady factory, been there on tour several times, know a few people who still work there, had an old high school buddy that was a tool and die guy there until he retired. Indeed they stop production of most bullets from time to time. They make them in periodic runs based on market forecasts. There are a few bullets they run 24/7 and others that may only be run once or twice every 5 years or so. They have warehouses full of bullets that were made months and years ago. If something sells out faster than forecast it may be a while before they run them again. It takes a while to get a press set up and running properly so they make a batch that is forecast to last a while, when stock gets low they juggle production schedules to fit in a run in a manner that makes sense to marketing. So, yes, they don’t produce every bullet continuously and a 140 gr. 6.5 HPBT probably isn’t their biggest demand bullet right now. The ELD has much more demand right now. They very well may discontinue it in favor of other more popular, faster selling bullets. I shoot Nosler, Barnes, and Hornady 140 gr bullets in my 260 Improved. The Hornady ELD shoots slightly better than the HPBT Nosler and Barnes, though they are more expensive too. Sometimes $10 a box makes a difference to me, sometimes it doesn’t.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

I think I found out where all the HPBT bullets went...

Just got a shipment of ammo at my store. Got 50 boxes of Hornandy 6.5 Creedmoor, 140 gr Match, 50 rounds per box sitting on my ammo shelf...

Maybe I should buy them and pull the bullets...:D

Better time ahead I hope...

I have tried many of the common/popular 140 grain 6.5's, Barnes, Hornady, Nosler, etc. I have not tried the Bergers. I was only satisfied with two of them, the Nosler ballistic tip hunting and the 142 SMK. By far the SMK is the most accurate for me and my gun, closely followed by the Nosler bt hunting. I have been waiting to try the Hornady BTHP but of course haven't been able to get them. I would like to find a projectile that costs a bit less than the SMK which I just bought 500 of, about three days before Midway put them on sale! Could have saved about 47 bucks. Oh well.

The 142 SMK is a great bullet.

I doubt the 140bthp is being discontinued. It’s the cheapest accurate bullet out there and with the raging popularity of 6.5, I’m sure it’s selling well. Creedmoor guys know the factory 140bthp load(gunner/black) is the best bargain going in factory match ammo. It’s popular and sells well.

Which isn’t to say they won’t shift production to spiked demand bullets like .223 or 9mm right now. I’m confident that any shortage of 140bthp is temporary.

Sierra bullets have usually shot better for me than hornady also the lot to lot consistently for hornady is not as good as sierra. We had a guy at our varmint shoots that was shooting very well with the hornady bullets when he ran out of that lot and bought a different lot and never could get them to shoot.
Drags

I’ve not found that to be true of the Hornadys just yet. While I’ve fired 1300 or so of them, it’s been sprinkled across several bullets and only a couple lots of any particular bullet.

That, and I’m just not a good enough shooter to see it.

I like the Hornady HPBT bullets for my non serious steel shooting and predators. Just ordered some Nosler 140 Custom Competition bullets to try at .27 cents apiece, hope they shoot as well or better.

I dont know about regular production cc, but I ordered a bunch of 140gr cc's that were 2nd's. they shot almost as good as my Bergers. maybe not for COMPITITION but definitely great for practice and steel and even local matches. mine shot great and still haven't run out. I'm close though:(
