Barrel off to clean

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
Who takes the barrel off to give it a good cleaning to keep crap out of the action, when using jb paste etc?

With a proper bore guide (rod guide) there should be no way solvent would get into the action or trigger. In fact, with no guide and no action attached to the barrel you run a good chance of messing up the chamber......and the rod, jag, brush.

Barrels are a lot easier to clean when they are on the action, use a good rod guide from Neil Jones or Lucas that has a bushing on the rod to keep it centered in the bore.

After a week of shooting at places such as Ben Avery or Whittington where the wind and grit freely blow, I take my rifles apart and clean the grit out and give the barrels a better than normal cleaning. Just normal cleaning after a trip to the range or a weekend match.

During a class at Blackwater years ago we were taught to take the barreled action out of the stock and use an air compressor to blow sand, grit and whatever else before cleaning with a solvent. At the range house they provided compressors just for that. Lots of sand at the range there. Jeff
