CA hunting - less than 1% of the population...

I personally think that anyone that quit hunting over a lead ban was just looking for a reason to quit hunting. [stuff deleted]

Not really. As swd noted, one can just hunt elsewhere such as Oregon or Nevada. The lead ban has very real, negative consequences on people with older, conventional slow twist barrels. Often the longer length of the lead free bullets (due to lower material density) can lead to an inability to adequately stabilize the lead free bullets. Also, the most accurate mass produced bullets in my experience have been Berger and Sierra, and neither makes lead free bullets. I haven't been able to obtain similar accuracy with loaded or handloaded lead free ammo, but my accuracy requirements are pretty stringent.

Bingo, A Home Run, Touchdown. 60gr Hornady JSP stabilize and shoot just FINE in my 221FB, 223Rem, 22-250.
NOT SO for 60gr PARTITIONS. l wondered why?? Ans. Partitions are LONGER. They won't stabilize in MY 1in12 and 1in14 twist barrels.

Let's face it. Intelligent management, of most anything, and California is an oxymoron...has been for years. The rampant stupidity of that State is mind blowing. I really feel for all the disenfranchised people who live outside urban areas in that State. Think of the incredible difference there would be in that State if they were on an Electoral College system like the Federal Government. California, like New Mexico where I live, is basically a conservative State held captive by urban mobs of very ignorant people.

Californians got what they deserve, I hope they acknowledge their mistakes and do better.
Almost all their rights have been stripped off from them.

If I lived in California I'd be hunting. Hunting another state to live in. WBM nailed it in post 23 above. WD

wbm. Our states used to operate under the SAME electoral college system and senate/house legislative system. Then along came Civil Rights ''Reapportionment'' of state legislatures. Twas the brainchild of the United States Supreme Court Chief Justice EARL WARREN... Before Warren each county had same number of Senators. State House Representatives were chosen based on POPULATION. Along comes Earl Warren saying the bigger/ more populace counties should have more voice and POWER. Aftermath was some counties have NO senators... ALL the state political power is in the cities.
Thats the situation we have in some states that have WACKO cities like LA Chitcago, New York City, Detroit...

So I deserve this bull$hit even though I never wanted this, never voted for this, and am OPENLY critical of all of this? Why?

I feel better now knowing I and the other members from CA on this forum got what we deserved.

BTW: every idiot liberal I knew of here has decided Texas is the place to move to, live in, and change politically. They are dedicated to their cause, flip Texas. Must have seen 25+ radical liberals move there so far. Good riddance.

It is just an idiot comment for him to make. How do they say that polite but derogatory saying in the southern states to the feeble minded: "Bless His Heart"

Guess there is no going back. Sad.
Congress usually changes a Supreme Court decision by rewriting or passing a new law. Part of the
''Balance of Powers'' written in our Constitution. Some say the Supreme Court gone from lnterpreting
the law to WRITING the law over the last 60 yrs.

I always scratch my head when I hear hunters/shooters from outside California bashing California as a whole - as though the 45% of us die-hard conservatives who are pro-gun had anything to do with how F...ed up this place is. Also consider most people who live here are NOT native Californians - just as the situation is in Hawaii as it relates to native Hawaiians or to Florida and native Floridians - which is really comprised of everything but. If I could send all the gay people in San Francisco back to their home States - send all the illegal aliens (and their gangster children) back to where they came from, etc., etc, the voting bloc would be quite different, indeed. I'm not a racist, nor do I wish bad for gay people - but they all came here from somewhere - and that is your state - or another country. I single them out as they tend to be anti-gun - and for no other reason. California alone did not vote in the liberal folks we like to complain about. It took not just a few bashed cities to do that - it took over half the country. This will ultimately prove to be a non reversible trend as long as we, as gun enthusiasts, remain divided on a State-by-State basis. California is slowly reverting to a Mexican State. Statistics prove this out from a population standpoint. If you were afraid to visit Mexico because of the crooked police, fear of getting kidnapped for ransom, etc. - This is the future of California. Once Mexican lawmakers are elected by their Mexican-dominant voting base - we will have what Mexico has enjoyed for centuries - corruption at every level. So if any of you vote for the clowns that aid this agenda (as does Kamala Harris)- the blame for all of this is to be shared. Do the right thing.

My initial testing with the lead-free bullets left me feeling the same way - as if my Varmint loads won't shoot under 1/3" MOA - it is considered unusable. What I found after testing virtually all the lead-free varmint and big-game bullets out there at the time (several years ago), that they are, indeed, capable of very good accuracy. so much so, that I actually prefer using some of them over leaded. I found they like to jump and that they are very powder "picky". The best bullets I have found are the Nosler lead-free Ballistic Tips (for Varmints) and the Barnes TTSX for big game. They will easily shoot under 1/3" MOA in all my varmint/hunting rifles and those of my friends for whom I did load development, provided they are fed the appropriate powder. The Barnes Varmint Grenades are also pretty accurate. If you want loads for a given cartridge, send me a PM for the powders to use. The only downside is they lose steam more quickly when reaching way out there.

You don`t deserve it anymore then we conservatives do in Delaware. This little state wants to keep up with the Cali. NY, NJ and Conn.s that is what we face. If we gave New Castle Co. to N.J. things would be a lot different. Sorry hogpatrol, but that`s the feeling down here in LSD. In my `hood the sheeple that came from NY,NJ and MD. brought their liberal agenda and will ruin what we do have. So, buckle up it`s fixin` to get fugly. Jeff

Thanks searcher for the thoughtful response. That's why I love this site! But I still prefer my berger and sierra loads and having to go to Oregon in order to go varmint hunting (belding's squirrels and rock chucks) is not a problem.

BTW, for those of you who don't know, varmint hunting in CA requires a hunting license. So like others here, I choose not to pay CA for that privilege.

No sorry needed. I'm seeing it every day, a proliferation of NY plates in my travels. Not saying they are all of the ilk that ruined that state but the state and local elections are going that way.

Same crap down here. They want the HOA to ban Trump yard signs, but nothing said about Coons signs. One sided debate always leads to turmoil. But that is how the left operates. Stay safe HP. Jeff

There are layers if issues with hunting in CA. I will address my personal feelings, based only on my observations in Southern California, primarily in Ventura and North Western Los Angeles counties.

Deer Hunting: It has been on the decline .

Upland birds: , What has ruined it for me here is the five year drouth.

Small game: Here is where the led free ammo, sucks.

Yes hunting is kind of drying up, hard to find young guys that are interested. The expense of equipment and ammo, combined with the hassle of getting there can be a PIA.
Yes, exactly. And add to that all the solar farms in north LA that wiped out many of my hunting areas. In the photo all the square stuff, even the upper left that isn't black, is solar farms, where I used to go get a limit of doves 3 days a week after work, and quail hunt if I got off early enough while waiting for the evening dove flight. The drought killed areas that I chukar hunted for decades. Birds don't have eggs if they don't get food and water and 4 years of no eggs = no birds as they only live ~4 years. Ever bird hunt with a .410 and steel shot ? It's not very productive and I'm not a 12 gauge shooter. As stated .22 rimfire is a no go even for ground squirrels. Cutting Edge was supposed to come out with a long range .22 but I haven't heard anything else about it lately. Yes it will take an 8-10 twist but I have those already and am eagerly awaiting my $1 per round non lead .22 ...LOL
RR2030 I did find some chukar by big pine while scouting X9B where I drew a deer tag this year. Speaking of solar, during our recent historic heat wave, over 100F for 2 weeks 114F tops, 60% of our power was coming from non renewable sources once the sun went down(no solar power )... and the state is determined to get rid of these natural gas, nuclear, out of state coal, etc. sources. They have no idea where they are going to get the power from but don't care. California.... leading the way !solar.jpg
