Made an 8-36 screw today.

Yep. I didn't have one handy plus I didn't need anything so long so I turned down a 10-32 and threaded it. I just needed a clamp screw to fasten the action to a mandrel. Can't use the rear action screw because out on the end of the tang it will band the mandrel and the action.

Isn't the middle action screw (on ADLs) or front trigger guard and 8-36? Yeah, this one:

For some inexplicable reason, the firearm industry is enamored with oddball fastener sizes. I've been working on an XP-100, a Wh***'s nightmare of firearm engineering. It's no wonder they're not made anymore.

Just wait until you try and find action screws for any number of milsurps! Odd ball screw sizes have been around for over a century. 1917 is 1/4"-30 and springfields are 1/4"-25. It's entirely frustrating!

I have a buddy who has made a few 1/4-25 action screws. He was happy his lathe has 25 tpi. Mine doesn't. it has 23 and 27, but no 25....

.040 feed would work but depending on the lathe, the feed lever would need to stay engaged and you'd have to be quick on the draw then run the machine in reverse after backing out. :D Some lathes need that method for cutting metric threads. It's a PITA but doable.

Our Ace Hardware has a section in that giant nuts, bolts, screw area that is for firearms.
