Remington 600 Riveted Extractor Issue, Need Help. SUCCESS!

The extractor on one of my PD rifles let me down. 600 Remington. I ordered two from Brownells and I am trying to get one in, in the correct shape.

By the time I get it in, it is bent too much like a "U". Have never done one before.

1. Is there a trick to getting it in?

2. Before I use up this one and the spare, is there any of you guys that would have a relatively fast turn-around as I would like to use this rifle again on another trip. Maybe a two week turn-around?

Thanks for any help.

You might get someone to do a Sako or a mini extractor on your bolt.
Gre-Tan may be a good placed to start....

Sometimes, you can just break the outside edge on the extractor first and also, break the edge on the outside of the rivet hole. Set the rivet end in place first then work around with the butt end of a screwdriver handle (there may be other tools which are more appropriate but this is what I use); like mounting a tire, until the extractor snaps into place.
Breaking that outside edge lets the extractor slip into place with out having to bend it too much. Occasionally, it may be necessary to shorten the tail very slightly and taper it (back to front) toward the tip. I hope my word pictures are adequate since I can't post real one's! WH

Yes, I understand. You did a good job of explaining. I actually did break the edge trying to do exactly as you explained. It didn't seem to help at the time.

However, I didn't use the butt end of a screwdriver to work it around (like a tire). I pushed on the end opposite the hole and things went bad by the time I got it compressed enough to snap in.

I may try again later, using your method. If I have to. :(

Thanks for the help.

Greg got back to me right away. He has a lot of work right now, as he would.

So I guess I will have to try again.

Get one installed by @carlsbad. Sako, mini m16 or whatever he wants to put in there.

The issue is time, I want to get back out there as soon as I can get reloaded. I don't want to put guys already stressed with work on a time schedule for me.

I actually got it working Dusty. I used some of "Wild Willy's Mojo" and a little adjusting when I got it in and it is working well enough (I hope) to make it one more trip and then I will get it done with a different extractor this winter.

Thanks.

I just got it working and used only 1 of the extractors I got from Brownells! I can usually figure things out pretty well, but this thing was kickin' my ass.

I used some of Will's ideas and was able to get "behind" it with dental pics once it was riveted, and bend it out so it works. I could do a little Dremel work on the "tail", but it works so I am leaving it as is.

Thanks everyone for the help.

Just asking, will the regular non-riveted extractor work?

I am NOT the authority on this, but my observation is no.

The newer bolts have a dimple (on the outside) and a shoulder (on the inside) on one side. And a recess on the other side that the old riveted extractor bolts don't have.
