Rem/Win barrel question

Going to do a rem-age barrel and chamber it in 22 br., for our Varmint Silhouette shoots(500yds max) I have a Rem 24" 223 varmint factory barrel and a Winchester stainless 223 factory 26" varmint barrel on the shelf, but thats all. Which one would be preferred to use?

Whichever one makes it legal if theres any rules involved. So youre going to turn, thread and chamber a factory barrel to accept a nut system? Youll have to make sure there is enough diameter out in front of the lug

plenty of diameter. Not many rules involved. Caliber limitations (6.5 max and 3200fps max. if over 22 cal)

what weight bullets do you expect to use and what twist are the barrels?

Doing it myself. Twist is 1-12". Have choice of 53/60 vmax and 60gr Hornday bthp and a Sierra 60 bthp and possibly a Hornady 62gr bthp I got from Midsouth.

Looks like I can do a regular shouldered setup with the Rem. barrel, but will have to do a rem-age type with the Winchester barrel (26" vs. 24" for the Rem)

Are these going to be full size animals or the small lightweight bench shooting type animals?

Prairie dogs, rabbits, woodchucks (150m/200m/300m) are full size. The 385m pigs are third scale IIRC and the chickens at 500yds are full scale

Of coarse u know the 223 case is longer than a 22br so you’ll have to cut a little off

I think a new blank would be in order like maybe a Douglas or a X Caliber .

Not a lot of future in a factory pipe. They are a few out their that would shot pretty well but that is an exception .

I made a Savage 22br. with an 1-8" twist but my vmax bullets just turn to a grey mist, along with my 60gr sierra's. My Savage is built of an F-class gun and just wanting to try a Remington in the chassis I have.

I can provide you with whatever twist you want ready to screw on an set your headspace.
Your dilemma would be solved.

I've never had a factory barrel shoot as well as a custom, but there may be some out there.
In my limited experience, load workup is much quicker for the customs I've used. They are not as particular about bullet type, powder or other components for "acceptable accuracy", whatever that is for you.

Used the Remington barrel and just shouldered it like a factory barrel. Bad thing is it only 23.5" long (cut 1/2" off the breech end first) compared to the Savage I have with a 29" tube, so velocities were about 300fps less. I expected it, but just had to try it anyhow. Shot very well, but looks like I will be contemplating another longer tube in the near future!!

I have had two factory barrels that shot great. One in the high 1's and one in the mid-to-high 0's. Very little load workup. I was shocked (and pleased!) but they are rare indeed.

What is the thread diameter on the Winchester barrel? Do you have enough shank to cut it off and rethread for the Remington?
