Rods new rest top review

I received a new rest top from Rod Brakhage to try out for my Seb Max and I must say that I am very impressed with it. I've been using it for a couple months and was reluctant to try it out at first as I'm one of those people that does not like tinkering with something that works so changing something up like my rest top is big for me. Rod makes a couple of different products such as the Mirage Rx spotting scope stand that I have used and really like so I figured I would give his top a try, he also makes carbon fiber mirage shields, rest handle extensions.

The top is intended for F-Class and some of the key features is that it rotates and pivots with the rifle allowing the base not to have to be in line with the target making set up easier. Upon receiving the top and unboxing it I first noticed that it was well boxed. In the box was the top, instructions, allen wrenches, screws, and an additional sandbag. This unit is still a prototype and production models will have a couple of refinements such as the locking knobs are more streamlined and the whole unit will be anodized black. Rod had told me it was simple to install but to be careful and that he was going to offer an installation and rebuild service of the rest as well to smooth them up again. He warned me that some of the screws were bad about sticking when removing the old rest top but since I have had mine apart before I didn’t have any issues and my old rest top came off no problem and the new top installed with no problems. Once I got the top installed I noticed it is solid with no play. The top is made to use the factory front rest stop but I am using a front stop of my own making since that is what I am used to. The installation instructions were very detailed, and the same top will fit the Max, Neo or mini. The top is machined very well and incorporates four rollers, two on each side and two pivoting sandbags one on each side. I am shooting a McMillan Kestros ZR and the top seems to be well suited for railed stocks but would work with anything. Previously I was using the Seb bag with slick material and a dryer sheet. My initial breakaway resistance with that set up was very minimum but with Rods top I have no breakaway resistance or stickiness at all. Rods top also repositions the level where it is easy to see with the rifle in the rest. Overall the rifle handles better, is easier/quicker to set up and you don’t have to worry about any sinking or unevenness as with thicker sand bags. Even with the sides of the top pressed firmly against the stock rails the stock still lifts out easily and should help reduce any torque. Tracking is perfect, I have been easily able to watch my trace all the way to the target and return to my previous holding point has been excellent. Overall I would highly recommend this top.

I have one of Rod’s tops and it is of the best quality in material and craftsmanship! The top swivels and makes setup very simple. I shoot a kestros zr and a cerus and the tracking is perfect, my breakaway force has reduced to almost zero! Tremendous improvement to a excellent rest!

Guys, everyone's orders went out today.

My new web site, www.therodzilla.com will be live in a week or two at the most. When my site goes live you will also see my banner ad on this forum so just click on it to go to my site. There will also be more information coming in the form of a video review on my Rodzilla 5 Axis top conversion from someone who has worked with my new product since mid June. I will also be offering several other products to the shooting community that are unique. As a tool and die maker with years of experience building research hardware for a major university i love developing new items that make shooting more enjoyable. Everything I will offer has been developed, tested and used on my rifles or as part of my setup.

Rod, does that mean you've worked for Okie Light Univ? Many of my family went there from Okie A&M time forward.
Nice to add another Okie to the forum, well you have been here a little while.
Your product looks real nice.

Butch, yes I worked for over 20 years at Oklahoma State University here in Stillwater. I like to think of OSU as THE university of Oklahoma. that other University down in Norman can play some good football at times but they get lucky a lot.

Just installed the Rodzilla top on my Neo. Went as smooth as butta'. Only issue is the lack of set screws on my preload springs on my NEO. I don't know if Sebastian was not putting any on that particular version as the holes were not threaded. No problem though as I will add some as Rod's top is threaded for M8-1.25 screws. I'll put it to the test soon. The machining is excellent...but just what I would expect from a tool and die guy:).

Robin, there should have been two springs going down through the X-Y block to pre-load or balance the weight of your rifle, these springs should have been in the block and held down with those m8x1.25 set screws. these springs have a plastic insert that rides on the bottom of the cavity milled into the bridge so they can slide back and forth while adjusting left to right. If you need a couple, them Ernie Bishop should be able to supply them.

Thanks Rod. My springs had no set screws nor was the top of the spring cavity threaded. I have some set screws in route.

Hi Rod,

Will you be able to ship to Australia? Interested in your slick new top for a SEB Mini.

I've only used the Rodzilla top for about 60rds during testing from a bench.

The things I like about it:

Takes no effort to align with the target; just get the long axis 'sighted' approximately to the target and the rear bag does the rest.
NO misalignment error between the stock and the front 'bag' as it naturally aligns to the stock.
Consistent contact width on the front bag as the 'runners' pivot to make full contact with the bottom of the stock.
No torque twisting of the stock in the front rest with a 8.25tw/190gr/2770fps round.

Things I don't like about it:

Doesn't come in obnoxious purple to match my shooting mat.
No other dislikes as of yet

No competition/prone use yet and the bench testing was only 300yds but I think it it will be a great addition to an already great rest. I will have shot a match by next week (good Lord willin' and the crick don't rise) so more to report soon.

Robin, nothing I hate more than a bad review. So I checked with my Cerakote guys and we can make our units obnoxious purple, obnoxious Pink, or any color Cerakote offers. I think you should get one of each.

Half and half? My current Open gun just happens to be, as a result of an experiment gone horribly wrong, an obnoxious pink!!!

An obnoxious purple top plate over an obnoxious pink base plate and frog green ears would work good. Nobody would ever steal it like that. But you might have issues getting it by the rules comity.

Seriously the Elite series Cerakote is an awesome finish and has the same coefficient of friction as Teflon. the Cerakoted units are an extra $40 but look and feel great. Our standard hard anodizing is probably as durable if not more so but the Elite Cerakote just looks better.
