6 BRA why not IMR 4064

I know that to some the question I have posed verges on heresy. However in light of the fact that
H 4895, and Varget are unavailable, and have been so off and on for several years, the question comes up is there an acceptable replacement? I have done some research and I have IMR 4064.
So I am seriously considering IMR 4064. I shoot 600 and 1000 yards. I would like input from others.

I've thought of trying IMR4166 there myself but haven't. That is the same basic burn as IMR4064 but less sensitive to temps.

4064 or 4350 has shot the smallest groups in every rifle I've owned. It will shoot some randomly larger groups, like it weirdly fell out of tune, which is why I think a lot of people stopped using the IMR powders. If you're not heartbroken about that, it's a wonderful powder that is usually in stock everywhere. 4320 is also right in the correct burn rate for the BRA too although it's always been more finicky for me.

Try some "Match Rifle" from Shooters' World. You just might be shocked at how good that is.

If you do not like ball powder for some reason, Reloader 15 works well but shhhh. Don't tell anyone.

Shooters World So62 has given me Great Results as a Varget Replacement.

All I will say is that you can't put all your eggs in the published burn rate basket. Varget and IMR4064are very near identical but frankly, 4064 almost always outshoots it..for me.
The biggest downside is it meters like a tree trunk.

A member posted about the linearity of IMR4166 and Varget just a few months ago.
Surprisingly 4166 was a great choice as temps climbed with a lil bit better stability.
All that said, I've been working with 4166 in my 6.5cm with 123gr scenar's and I'm liking the results so far.

I am old school. I use a Redding balance beam scale, with a Lee dipper and throw a charge just under what I want, Then trickle the rest. It works for me, even with tree trunks. Most all of our shooting is between 40 and 85*. So temperature may not be a problem.

I encourage you to try it out and report back. IMR 4064 is one of my go to powders and I’ve been tempted to try in in my 6 BRA. The only reason I haven’t is because I have a great load with IMR 8308XBR and I don’t want to use up the barrel testing different stuff.

I think IMR 4064 should perform well in 6BRA. I have started using it in several cartridges in just the past few years & it has performed very well in .250 A.I., 7mm-08 & most recently a 6x47 Lapua. I may give it a try in a new to me .22-250 soon. Good Luck !

I am going to try IMR 4064 for FF loads, for 6 BRA, while breaking new Kreiger barrel. With 105 Bergers I will start at about 30 gr. This will be loaded into Lapua 6 BR (N) brass. The new barrel is coming from Kelbys. Good people. I will not be able to zero my seating die until the barrel goes on the action. It should be here in about two weeks. Most every dealer is out of any powder that works well in 6 BR or BRA. I however have Varget and 8208. So if the IMR 4064 does not work out soon, I will have other powders. If I may ask, what is your 8208 load for 6 BR?

Well I have FF 40 Rounds. My calcs with Quick Load 6 BR
case volume changed to 39.1 and weighing factor changed to .4 come out to 29.9 gr IMR 4064, 105 Berger,
28" barrel, 2916 fps. 59.3 KPSI. I will probably run it over the Lab Radar this week, and determine actual's.
I FF with 29 gr IMR 4064, no presssure signs. All seems pretty normal to me. Has anyone been here before me?
Has any one found a reliable way to use Q/L for 6 BRA?

I had listed the case volume of the 6 BRA case in grains of water as 37.5. That was in error. The actual case capacity of the 6 BRA case in grains of water is 39.1. See correction above. Sorry.

I may give it a try in a new to me .22-250 soon.

All 3 of my 22-250 barrels liked 4064 best. 35.2gns over a 50 VMAX or any of the 52-53gn match bullets. Exceptional accuracy. I think you'll be impressed. Outperformed every other powder I tried.

My 22BR shoots 4064 very well too. 28gns behind a 90gn class bullet is a slow but very accurate node that soots 3/4 of the neck on my cases (so pretty low pressure). I imagine you could start at 30 with the BRA and be just fine.

When my 6.5x47 gets here, I'll try 4064 in it too and I expect it will again provide exceptional accuracy. IMR4064 and IMR4350 are exceptional powders that I think many here overlook. That's fine though cause I never have trouble finding IMR on the shelves and I'd like it to stay that way. Everyone else can keep lining up for Hodgdon and wait for Varget and H4350.
