What I learned about dialing in a barrel

I don't do it the same way as Alex but his way works for him and my way works for me. We each have our reasons and our process has been developed and refined over many years with many data points. Between the two there is no wrong way. It's mostly about paying attention to details. All of them.

Gordy does initial dial in with Grizzly rods and then checks with a long reach. Me too.

Thanks guys, this aligns to what I was thinking. My plan, once I get my lathe out of storage and set up, included using gauge pins to true up the part in the spider for the breech and the muzzle. Although I do not plan to pre-bore.

Maybe I'm not understanding, or it isn't obvious in the picture, but how do you get TIR to change in 2 places in a 2 or 3" section of barrel with a single point of contact, be it with a spider or chuck?
Using a long stem indicator in the throat to get it true makes sense. Using the same contact as a pivot to get the breech true makes sense. Are you changing and/or chasing that relationship from throat to breech with an outboard spider at the muzzle end of the barrel?

Grizzly rods are different that range rods.

I use my Grizzly rod to size up a bushing I plan on using. Works great...

Dial in throat (1) point, dial in muzzle (2nd point), both running concentric....same setup no moving, you pre-drill short of chamber depth, then come in and clean that up with a boring bar. Check your work... muzzle still dialed in, throat still dialed in and your new fancy fresh hole (where chamber is going to be) is concentric and in line with the original TWO points. You now have (3) points that are "dialed" in so to speak.

True you can only dial in (2) points initially, but your 3rd is being machined in so to speak. Your reamer will now follow your pre-bored hole and the end product will be a chamber from base to throat, concentric inline with your muzzle.

This is all assuming that your setup and workholding is correct. Use a too tight of bushing on your reamer and that can have an ill affect on your throat. Really, you don't even need a bushing IMHO.

Is this the best way??? More than one way to skin the cat for sure. I have chambered many different ways over the last 12 years. The ONLY way to know what is going to be the best for you, is to check your work as you go, and in the end when finished. If you aren't checking, you are just assuming.

i have a grizzly rod but not a range rod. Do you mean you use it like a handle to check the bushing in the bore?? On a side note my grizzly rod (and my reamers) has that snap ring to secure the bushing. I just hate those little things. Need to geta 100 bag for sure. Im thinking its such a pta to change them some people probably go with the wrong size instead of doing it. i did make a little tool which helps and i got a wee little needle nose plier

My Grizzly Rods have the screw. I do have a couple of Manson reamers with the snap ring, and when I finally figured out how to do it changing bushings became easy.

Never going to happen. There easy to get off but are hard to find once in a while also

ok -- yeah they send alot along with the bushings for a reason. between my vision and my big fingers they wrnt easy to get off for me until i made a little tool.
