Hooked on Gunsmoke

"Oldies but Goodies. Many good Westerns on TV back in the day."

When Gunsmoke was a first run program I always wished they would produce a Miss Kitty show.

I'm 50 and I havent had tv for the last 6-7 years or so. I have all these old shows on dvd and that is what I watch. Right now I'm watching Gomer Pyle USMC. Andy Griffith, Mayberry RFD, Hogans Heros, Honey Mooners, Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Mash, etc. Since I got rid of the tv and their commercials that insult the intelligence of a monkey, my stress level has gone way down. Now if we could get rid of the politicians that would be a real stress reliever.

Here is a bit of trivia for you. James Arness' first big acting role was as the monster in the original version of the movie "The Thing".

It's funny, but I was discussing Gunsmoke with a buddy just the other day. He ask if Matt ever married Miss Kitty in the show. I was quick to respond, "OH NO, cowboys never married saloon girls unless they were drunk!...LOL

Marry, that would have be out of the question. If Matt ever kissed Kitty on screen. I sure missed it. He was too busy Marshalling for that nonsense, but he always had time for a free drink. LDS

I grew up watching Gunsmoke it came on every Sunday. I am a huge fan of the Clint Eastwood westerns The Outlaw Josey Wales is my favorite.
For years we had a local channel that showed Gunsmoke Saturday and Sunday, good times watching those as a kid and I still catch episodes from time to time. Loved it when Doc Adams get Festus riled up and Festus would call Doc an old scutter.

As for Clint Eastwood westerns, you are correct, Josey Wales is the best.

Its not Gunsmoke, but I just watched Support your local Sheriff with James Garner this last weekend. I really enjoyed it. I don't watch to much TV or movies now a days especially the stuff they're putting out these days.

Festus was a hoot.....always had dust on himself. Good memories.

The reason James arness didn't like riding or walking much is because of a leg injury. He was severely wounded by German machine gun fire in the invasion of Anzio 1943

Support Your Local Gunfighter is even better I think. The wife and I just watched this one the other night. One of my favorite old Westerns. James Garner, Jack Elam, Chuck Conners, and the very beautiful Suzanne Pleschette as the gun weidling Patience "Sidewinder" Martin. What's not to like.

Howdy!

Saturday night, My Dad monopolized the TV; viewing shows like Lawrence Welk, Jackie Gleason and ( I thought it was on Sat ) Gunsmoke.

Burt Reynolds as a young blacksmith, Dennis Weaver w/ his post-war gimpy leg, Buck Taylor as Newly.

I still remember the scene where Miss Kitty threatened bad guy Forest Tucker w/ an 1860 “ Horse Pistol “. Another episode starring Buddy Ebson as bounty hunter “ Drago “... along w/ his mean no-name dog. The show where Steve Forest abducts and acosts Miss Kitty, and tells the town
“ Get Dillon. I got his woman “. Another show where Dub Taylor appears as a pre-boom oil man, uttering the words “ Destiny, says I “. An episode where Newly is standing in for Doc, and performs an emergency tracheotomy on a backwoods hick.... only to be threatened w/ his own death, when the local believe Newly slit the man’s throat.

IMHO - the show really came into its own after the addition of Ken Curtis as Festus Hagen.... and foil for Doc ( “ Orny ole’ Scudder ! “).

One memorable episode where an enemy of Marshall Dillon abducts Doc, and threatens to lynch him @ dawn.... as reprisal for his own brother’s hanging; which he blames Dillon for. The Marshall and Festus work feverishly all night to free themselves before dawn arrives.... only to be too late ... and they see the rope stretch w/ a Doc at the end.

What was one of the commercials back then....
“ Let Hertz put you in the driver’s seat, today ! “ the song playing as a seated figure flew into the seat of a moving car.

Watching Gunsmoke with my Dad was a religion in our house. I've been watching re-runs ever since they started re-running them and have seen almost ever episode so many times that I lost count.:):):)

Also a huge fan of Gary Copper - High Noon being one of my all time favorites. Also a huge fan of Audie Murphy and Randolph Scott.

There there is John Wayne - can't get enough of that either. My favorite being the Searchers and The Shootist.

Yes - I'm addicted to those old westerns. But then there is Clint Eastwood's trilogy, A Fist Full of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and the Good, Bad, and Ugly - the music is awesome and I listen to it on a routine basis especially when I go ground hog hunting - it gets me in the mood.:)

Every Saturday morning Gramp & I would take Nana shopping, go to the hardware store while we waited & talked with Chick, go home & have beans & hot dogs & watch the westerns.
I remember being glued to the tv from about 5 ft away routing for the Indians. The other thing I remember most is more often than not when I turned around to ask if he saw that, he'd be asleep in the chair! :)
I'll never forget it, & still watch all I can. Those were my favorite days.
