Help...Deleading a rifle barrel?

I have been firing "my" cast boolits (with gas checks) through one of my Garands, and got excellent accuracy and very little recoil. Only problem is that even after regular cleaning, and then scrubbing with a bronze brush with Chore Boy wrapped around it, the borescope shows small patches of leading that looks like it has been "sprayed on", in the last third of the barrel. I'd like to use the Lewis lead remover, but I only have them in 38 and 44/45 calibers. I don't think they make them in 30 cal, and if they did, do they make longer rods for rifle use? I appreciate any and all ideas on how to remove the fouling. Thanks guys!

Frontier scrubby pads will take it out without damage. Wrap a few of the stringy things around your bronze brush and have at it. jd

Coat the bore with either Kroil or Ed's Red for a couple of days. Then use your Chore Boy again. Those liquids will penetrate under the lead, and can be easily removed. Used it all the time before I learned how to prevent the leading in the first place.

Using the jackets bullets approach was commonly thought to work many years ago. Current thinking is it just "irons" the lead to the barrel. But YMMV.

How you gonna get the lead out of the gas cylinder & off oprod face & sides? Lead vapor doesn't get deposited just on the bore when you shoot cast.

I shot cast in a Desert Eagle a few years ago, led to a malfunction only swapping out a new gas piston'd solve.

03 Remington leaded on me years ago. I was told the FMJ thoughts on firing it out. Went from bad to worse, actually worst case I ever had.

Kroil and time are your friend.

I see quite a bunch of folks using cast in the gas guns. I was of the same thoughts of it causing problems. With the coatings that are all the rage now may have solved those issues.

Word of caution, follow directions carefully and when you get the bottle, immediately remove the plug from the neck so it can breath. First time, did not know this and solvent leaked out. After removing the plug from the next one, no problem.

I cant believe some expert hasn't already posted: "all ya gotta do is get some mercury and fill up the bore. Lead will be dissolved overnight!!!" Okay, I'll just run on down to the ol' mercury store and grab a gallon......I honestly don't know which one I've heard more, "I was a Navy SEAL in Vietnam", or "getcha some mercury".

Yep, old timers use to use mercury to remove lead. I believe the term to google is amalgamation. That may or may not be the proper spelling but google will figure it out.

My first can dissolved after a summer in the garage kept smelling the product, Just thought it was the cap not sealing good thing I keep all my cleaning products in the plastic shoe boxes no lids on the boxes, What a mess it made in the bottom of the box, I even transferred what was left in to a glass canning jar it dissolved the lid, Other than rescuing a purchased lead fouled used barrel I don't shoot any un coated cast bullets any longer, PC coated ONLY!!, The Lead Out does do a great job though, It has made several ANTIQUE (late 1800s) barrels shoot as good as new

Also, I went to Brownells and discovered that the Lewis lead removed comes in 30\32 caliber also, and I went to my gun cleaning bench and found that the Lewis's threads screw right into my Dewey rifle rods. Game on!

Coldbore, have you ever tried Shooter's choice lead remover? If so, is one better than the other?

Heat up the bbl enough where the lead melts but the BBL Steal does not!!

Som where I think on cast boolits there was a recipe for making lead remover patches. It was simple and used Bon Ami as the main ingredient. It gave you an impregnated patch that when tightly fitted to the leaded bore or a cylinder face would "grab" the lead deposits and pull them out on the patch. It does work, unfortunately its been some time and I dont remember the recipe or the source. Just like the lead remover patches, dont get too exuberant as it/they will remove bluing if overdone.
