Peterson Brass

So, when will you provide us information on what your next runs will be?
Well , I can tell you a lot of things that have been asked about are regularly scheduled runs , i.e. 6x47 , creedmores etc , as for developmental projects , there is no real way to determine time as there is so much involved. Im trying my best to keep up with answering as well as my responsibility with the company. Thanks for your input and patience.

All good, we appreciate you coming on here and hearing what the target shooting world is looking/hoping for. What you have in development (300 wsm and 280AI among others) are big ticks in the box for many on here. What we really appreciate is brass which is strong, well made and above all, consistent and readily available.

Yes, I did have my hopes up. winter of 2018 they teased with 270 and 300 wsm. I emailed Peterson for an ETA but could never get a date. Keep hearing it was in development. Then we get this thread and it sounded like it might materialize...But now it dosent sound good. Can't make WSM brass but they make 7.62x54R, 33XC and Cheytac. I get people need good brass but picking these over WSM brass? I wish Lapua or ADG would come thru. Rant over!!!!

I still think it's un- American to not make 30-06 brass. Also I'm having a hard time trying to figure out how to get the same velocity from Peterson brass in 6.5 Creedmoor as I can with Starline and from other brass makers. I guess it's just the price for thicker brass. I'm not complaining, it just seems a fact of life for me. I'm grateful that Peterson brass is with us, and I understand if I need more velocity maybe I need a different cartridge, just saying there is a trade off from what I have seen so far. I do like Peterson brass just want some for my rifles in 30-06.

Great news. Thanks for the information. I will try to find out where I can buy some. I found some at euro optic but it's back ordered but I will keep looking. Really glad you said some thing. It's not listed on your web page yet and am very surprised you have made some. Looks like you not are being un- American by not offering 30-06 brass. I'm sorry for the implication. I had no idea. Thanks for setting be straight. I will find some.

In Peterson's defense, there is a Patent (not from Winchester or Remington) on the WSM & RSAUM casings.

When i was looking at a wildcat cartridge i contacted Quality Cartridge about a run for either the parent case, or my drawings.
$1,500 for the engineering/ tooling, plus a minimum purchase of 1,000 cases. At a cost of over $5 per case.

While i understand having a good relationship with a vendor, one thing i would like to see from Peterson is more wide spread distribution, and the ability to purchase directly.

I live 95 miles away. I don't feel my products need to be shipped out of state to then be shipped back. Would be nice to be able to plan a day trip to Pittsburgh (which my wife & i do) and swing by on the way in to pick up.
Or heck, even direct ship.

I bought my first box of 308 SRP directly from Peterson almost two years ago. Still on that first box of fifty. Now have at least 50 reloads on them. Primer pockets still tight and no splits. I have done full resizing, neck sizing only and have fired them in 3 different 308 rifles. I do anneal them after every firing. Can't wear them out. Hope to see some 270
Winchester cases someday. Excellent Brass!

I bought my first box of 50 .308 Win Match directly from Peterson 2 1/2 years ago and I've just now retired them after 17 reloads as head separation has begun. There's been no other issues over that time. Likewise, I have full sized and neck sized only and have annealed them after every firing. It would have been nice to get 50 reloads out of them, but I guess 17 isn't too bad, huh???

If they're patented their protection would've run out by now. They were introduced to the market in the early 2000's and the initial filing would've been well before that.

I bought a few boxes and have had time to reload them. I think for me the 30-06 brass works better than the 6.5 Creedmoor. With the 6.5 Creedmoor brass I was getting pressure signs with RL16 and had to back off to the point I could not get the velocity I wanted. It could be the powder so it's to early to draw any definite conclusions. But with the 30-06 shooting 215 bergers at 1000 yards with the same load as Lapua, on the same day, shot back to back, your brass went from 27.9 moa with Lapua to 26.5 moa with your brass, and was more accurate with no pressure signs at all. I didn't chronograph it yet but it looks good. I'm very pleased. I was impressed with the OAL of your brass when I trimmed the necks to turn, all were right there with barley any work needed. Thanks for making 30-06 brass.

The 6x47 brass is great. Nobody else should even try to make it. Would be a waste of time.
Peterson has the 6x47 down perfect.

I can't remember when the patent was put in. I do remember it was a writer from a gun magazine. Winchester & Remington had to pay him a royalty for them to use the WSM, & SAUM.

Rick Jamison was the writer. Remington and their cartridges were not involved in any way. Jamison settled out of court with Winchester in 2006. Winchester took all the wsm's and wssm's to saami, which opened them up to anyone making guns, reamers, dies, and brass in those cartridges.

I've used 100 cases of 6.5 CM I was impressed, I'm not a long time reloader so that may not be too noteworthy. I just got another 100 in the mail today, I'm not impressed as much with these. Unfortunately I was sent boxes from two different lots. The cases in one lot looked like the mouths are all peened over almost as if the had been repeatedly dropped straight down peterson brass 019.jpgand impacted on the neck mouths. I measured 20 cases. Weight varied 1.2 grains, I have no idea if that is within normal tolerances or not. Neck O/D varied a thou., neck I/D varied a thou., dia at shoulder varied a thou. and dia at extractor groove were all the same. Which I would suspect is not too bad. The O/A length varied from 1.906 to 1.9095 which are all below the trim length, according to my reloading manual. I think if the case mouths weren't somehow flattened short the lengths would be above the trim to length. These cases are shipped in a nice cartridge box with a one inch foam pad above the case mouths so I don't think it would have been caused by shipping. I couldn't get a good photograph of the case mouths so at great expense and sacrifice I had a drawing commissioned which I will attach. All 50 cases in the second box from a different lot are good.

So do I deburr the inside and outside of the case mouths and shoot them or reject the cases because of the short case length?

Yes I think you're right. I'll have to contact Peterson brass and the dealer I bought them from.

I got a 10 power jeweler's glass to inspect the neck mouths, the brass isn't peened over just a large irregular burr from what looks like a dull cutter, or the brass was loose in the clamp when the cases were trimmed to length. Pretty ugly whatever the cause. I'd have to deburr the whole works and run them through a mandrel neck sizer before I load them. The last hundred I got were spot on and I just loaded them right out of the box without doing anything to them other than measuring. I remeasured all the cases in both boxes with three calipers and the majority are under the trim to length.
