KG 12 Copper remover

I started with nothing. I still have some left.

Is anybody using KG 12 or or other KG cleaning products? How effective is it at removing copper?

I have used it for the last couple of months at the range and in the shop. It seems to be very good. I follow the instructions on the bottle. I use the carbon remover as well. What I'm finding is that after 3 to 4 cleanings, the barrels clean up more quickly (fewer patches required). Has anyone looked at a barrel using a bore scope after cleaning with this product?

I used to use them for few years. Copper, carbon remover and oil. Patch came out clean, but if I ran a soaked patch later, it was dirty.
Now I only use whipout only. Start with “accelerator”, followed by foam and let it soak. I finish with “patchout” and finish with “weapon shield” oil.
My guns are happy, I’m happy and barrels are squeaky clean.

I get good results with both copper and carbon removal letting the kg12 sit over night. If I don’t have time, I let it sit for 15+ minutes and brush till clean.

This is a big of a debate as which came first, the chicken or the egg.
You will get many saying this works and this doesn't.
You will have to try them yourself.
I've used KG for years, and it does a OK job.
Sweets works but don't leave in barrel long.

KG 12 out performs the strong smelling ammonia based solvents "that I've tried" by a very large margin. Like @Ranger188 said, you will get many answers on this topic. The only way to figure it out is to try for yourself and confirm to with a bore scope. When you stop seeing blue patches with a cleaner does not mean the copper is all gone. You have to see it to know what's going on. KG 12 doesn't even turn patches blues.

I have not tried a wet patch later. I will when I get a chance.
Thanks for the insight.

I ditched Wipeout. It's a mess. And takes just as long to clean a barrel. For copper I use Montana Extreme, or Sweets.. If it's really bad I use JB Bore paste.. IMO Wipe Out is a waste of time..
I agree with you on the wipe out. That's why I switched to kg12. I use the carbon cleaner and the oil too.
I usually run 3-4 wet patches thru, then let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then dry patch it out. The I use the carbon cleaner. Wet patches until clean. (Usually 4-6 patches) then dry patch (another 4-6 patches) and oil.

I stopped using sweets because I was afraid I would leave small traces in the barrel, thus damaging it.

I will get thick black gunk on the first 2 wet patches soaked with kg12, then black streaks, fading to brown, then no streaks. Then I switch to the carbon cleaner. I get Gray streaks fading out to clean patches after 6 or more patches.

I leave Sweets in the barrel for 8 to 12 hours in my cleaning system for stainless match barrels. I have been doing this for years.I see no limit to how many times in a given time frame you can apply it in the instructions. But if the manufacturer can get you to apply more product he sells more. I spoke to some shooters a few years make who left it for days in barrels and in an industrial testing lab could defect no problems. I will keep doing what I done for years

From the ones I have used and based on the borescope:

1. JB Bore Paste is the most aggressive cleaner
2. Iosso is a close second
3. KG-12 is the most effective chemical copper cleaner, significantly better than Bore Tech
4. KG-1 Carbon Remover and Slip 2000 Carbon Cutter both do well at getting out carbon

Test results on several copper cleaners.

Does K12 contain any odor?

Reason I asked is I've never tried it and I'm interested but if it has a strong odor it would be problem for me. I switched from Shooter's Choice about 2 years ago to Bore Tech Carbon and Copper Remover because they're odorless - wifey has a breathing condition and the ammonia in Shooter's Choice was bothering her badly. Also I found that the Bore Tech products were far superior to Shooter's Choice in removing both carbon and copper fouling which is probably no surprise to many on this site. Thanks for any input.

It's good stuff and much more efficient than Sweets.....not that Sweets doesn't do what you'd expect, it just takes longer.

KG12 is certainly kinder on bronze brushes.
What I'm finding is that after 3 to 4 cleanings, the barrels clean up more quickly (fewer patches required).
I've sorta noticed this too as if you can keep on top of the grud it's certainly easier to keep a barrel clean.

I particularly like KG12 for running a barrel in where any copper fouling slows the bore polishing process dramatically and as it works fast on thin coatings of copper it doesn't impact as much as other cleaners on precious range time.

Slight ammonia odor however it's not strong enough to make ones eyes water like Sweets does.

Things smell differently to different people. KG-12 does not contain ammonia. It has an order, but it's barely noticeable to even my painfully sensitive nose. I don't think I would describe is ammonia like but whatever it is it is mild.

Now KG-1 carbon remover does indeed have an odor.

I recently have tried wet patching with accelerator, followed by wet patch of Carb out. Let it work for 5-10 minutes. Kroil wet patch gets a lot of black crud. A patch of accelerator and then the wipe out foam, let it work for 15-20 minutes(hunting rifles). Patch it out with kroil, a couple dry patches. Last a wet patch of Hornady one shot cleaner and lube. Ready to store and then shoot.

I’ve gotten very good results with KG12. It removes copper as quickly or more quickly than anything else I’ve tried, usually without requiring a brush. (Yes, I have a bore scope). That it doesn’t reek of ammonia is another plus.
