6.8 Creedmoor

Wondering if anyone has tried this out yet? My barrel should arrive today, ordered a prefit months ago for a 243 I just couldn't get to shoot how I wanted. I've been on the 6.8 Spc bandwagon since about 09, and think it's just about perfect for an AR, but wanted to try something different. Preferred Barrel Blanks cuts a 6.5 Creed chamber and then cuts the neck to 0.309" and throats to customer specs.

Barrel will be 24", I plan on cutting it down if needed. Throated for a 130 Accubond at 2.750", didn't want it to long for other bullets, but didn't want it seated too deep either. Will be starting with 130gr bullets with plans of it being a whitetail and coyote rifle.

I'm going to start with a Speer standard 130gr BT to get some data and break in the barrel. I'm going to look at powders from Varget/RL15 to 4350/RL16. Start near low to mid 6.5 loads and go up from there. It's similar in capacity to 270-08 and 270 Redding.

Any thoughts and suggestions?

I thought that if you kept it 6.5 or smaller it could be called Creedmoor. If you go to a larger caliber, then you have to call it a TC! Just kidding! It sounds like it should be a fine hunting cartridge. Have you given any thought as to get a sizing die? I would consider going with the 308 case. Then you can use a 7-08 bushing die, with a smaller bushing for case sizing.

I'm also a long time fan of the 6.8spc and have been shooting it in long range silhouette matches for the last 5 years. As a fan of .277 caliber I think your idea for a 6.8 Creedmoor sounds great! I had started drawing up a wildcat 6.8-284Ackley designed for the heavy 170gr .277 berger. The Swift Scirocco 130 should be an excellent hunting bullet in the 6.5 case. Probably up to 150gr bullets around 2700fps.

Just for fun, here's what I was working on. I may still get a reamer and have a barrel spun up. Likely a remage. Might go with a Shehane version so I can use a standard dies. It's a ways off though.

I’ve thought about this for a few years also. However staying with the regular 284 case. Now that Matrix can ship into the US again, you also have a 165 and 175 bullet to try.

I've started load development but am struggling to find time to go to the range. I'm going to start with RL15 and Shooters World Precision to start with, just five charges shot with a chrono to get velocity readings. I'm hoping for 2800-2900 fps with 130 gr bullets. I think I'll be in the low range with faster powders, RL17 and 16 will be after the first ten rounds or so just to get a decent idea of velocity and powder ranges.

As an update I am moving right along with this project. I have hit 2840 with zero pressure signs with both RL15 and RL16. Precision did good, I just need to keep going up in charge weight. I stopped at 41 grains on today's charges, everything looked great, one grain apart from 37-41gr, all went into an inch at 100. I'm going to probably try some h4350 at some point, but I think the faster medium range powders are going to win out.

Thanks for the update, following with interest.

Finally did some accuracy testing without the magnetospeed attached. Using 42gr of RL15 in Nosler brass, CCI200s and Nosler 130gr Ballistic Tips I got a 0.75" group, and a 0.65" group at 42.5gr. The last round in the 42.5gr had the slightest ejector mark so I'm going to try 42gr again and see if it repeats.

When I did velocity testing 42gr got me 2898fps with one shot. Next up is 300 yard accuracy with that load and I'm going to test out some 130gr Berger classic hunters.

I have some RL16 to try, first batch ended at around 2750fps with no pressure, trying same charges with the BTs. All velocity testing was done with 130gr Speer SPBT, the Nosler BTs build pressure a bit more, so the velocities were a bit higher in relation to charge to the Speer.

Getting lots of good information though!

I bit the bullet so to speak and ordered a jug of Staball 6.5. Seems to really speed up the 7mm-08, similar weight charges are used with the 6.8 Creedmoor, so I thought it would be a good fit. If it doesn't work well that's fine, 22-250 AI, 30-06 and a half dozen other rounds I load for will work with this powder.

I'm not a fan of 270 anything, the selection of components on both sides of that bore diameter far outweigh anything available for it. Barrel selection, no matter who makes them doesn't have the twist selection that the 6.5s and the 7MMs have. Of cartridges that will fit in an AR package, the 6.5 Grendel and the 6.8 SPC. With bullets of a similar S/D out to around 400 yards there is little difference, from that point on to 1000 yards, the Grendel kicks it ass, largely because of better bullet selection.

This might be worth a try too.

Ok.

I've shot my 24" barreled 6.8spcII side by side with a grendel of same barrel length. Other than a couple clicks elevation, (maybe 3/4 moa difference) nothing compared to shooting a 200gr .308 at 1k. I run 120gr cnc turned match bullets at 2710 fps from my 6.8's. The difference between 6.5 grundel and 6.8spcII is not much to talk about.

I think this 6.8creedmoor is an excellent option. Great selection of hunting bullets, excellent SD of bullets available, with proven performance on game.

It's not about whether a 6.8 "works." It's about whether it works better than an option that already exists. Dropping down to 6.5, you get ubiquity, SAAMI standardization, excellent overall performance, a plethora of premium brass, and a great selection of bullets.

Or you could have a 6.8 just to say you do.

Same for going bigger. 7-08 doesn't need any defense from me as a hunting round, and availability of high BC bullets in 7mm is arguably the best of *all* calibers.

There's simply no difference to justify the costs of wildcatting this.

Or it could be about just wanting to do it to be different. In which case, knock yourself out and have at it and please post results.

Wondering if any more development has been done with your wildcat?
