6.5 CM Lapua Brass

It shows as small rifle primer pockets.

Anyone seen any difference in 6.5 CM small vs. large primers? Need to be small magnum primers?

Lapua brass worth the $$$ in 6.5 CM?

Gotta buncha Hornady brass heading into my 3rd firing loaded a little hot (2750 fps, which is hot per the reloading manuals for a 140 gr bullet) and looking to replace it and up my game til I eventually re-barrel to 6mm something.

Thanx.

Def get magnum primers if you are using the small primers. That said I have seen no evidence of better SD with the smaller primers. Really SD went up in every singe tested scenario. This is probably because as testing has shown a small primer can only reliable detonate a powder column that is 1.5in long. Where the CM is a 1.6in powder column.

I still shoot Hornady & Nosler LRP brass in one of my guns that I don't push hard, but only use the Lapua SRP brass with CCI 450 primers in the other. The large primer brass can't get pushed hard before the primer pockets expand after a couple firings, the small primer brass last very well for me.

Alpha published an informative piece on large vs small:

I’m not a BR shooter.

For me to be able to enjoy the sport, I must be thrifty.

I went Alpha SRP in 6Creed and couldn’t be more pleased.

I ended up with minimal load development expense, zero brass prep and excellent accuracy beyond my expectations.

And, given the SRP route I took, my 100 cases should last the life of the barrel (mild RL19 w/105s).

A win win win in my book.

YMMV

I recently got a Creedmoor barrel. I generally use Lapua brass in everything so I bought a box each of berger 130, 140, and 156 grain loaded ammo to try. The 130 and 140 use srp brass and the 156 uses lrp brass. I've now fired the srp brass 5x and the lrp 4x. I'm loading 150 smk right at 2700 with rl16. CCI 450 and 200 primers. Primer pockets still tight and I can't tell the difference between the cases as far as how they shoot out to 1125 yards.

SRP should have the primer pockets last longer at warmer loads, but I've yet to see conclusive data showing better SD with one vs the other. The testing I've seen so far is all inconclusive at best.

With everything else constant my velocity is a bit slower and groups a little smaller with the sp

We are at what I consider to be the pinnacle of high quality U.S. made brass selection. There is no argument that Lapua makes excellent quality brass but we have been subjected to this single source supplier for long enough. Now we have other choices for high quality brass.:)

One I just stumbled onto:

The list of cartridges being manufactured is a lot more selective but it generally covers the largest cross section for those of us looking for consistency and quality from a manufacturer. Several cartridges are available in both small and large primer pockets.:D

I run mine pretty hot with Lapua brass and CCI SRM primers. The rifle is a hunting rifle Model 7 with a 20" barrel on it. Using 48 grns of RL26 and a 140 Partition from the chronograph I'm getting 2800 FPS. It is a stiff load or this rifle. I defiantly worked up to 48 grns. You can tell it in the recoil also compared to my old loads if 41.5 grns of H4350 which was around 2600 across the chronograph. I couldn't run that hot with LR primer brass. My son has shot thru the shoulders on several big hogs and had exists with this load. With the old loads I cant remember if any of the old loads blew thru or not. Most of them I can say for sure did not exit. We have had some pretty good hog rodeo's with the old loads. That's why I tried the Lapua SR Primer brass and Partitions and it is like we have stepped up in caliber. They have made a believer out of me.
