I think I want a Ballistic gel set up

anyone use ballistic gel to test different bullets and have experience cooking/reusing it? I want to check into a set up to make the gel, and a few molds to test different bullets, but know nothing about it. I am sure it is a something I will get, use a dozen times and then it will sit on the shelf.

Any pointers and/or suggestions?

Any one have an old set up they are tired of playing with and would sell/loan it to me?

I cooked up quite a bit of animal-based ballistic gel for a project in a forensics class in college. It was quite a few years ago, so I can't offer much relevant advice. That being said, as I recall the cooking process stank to high heaven, so if you go that route the turkey cooker is a good suggestion as you can set it up in a garage or outside. Not sure how truly "odorless" the more modern synthetic options are.

For molds, I used large tupperwear containers (I was attempting to VERY roughly approximate the FBI protocol, with ). The ballistic gel doesn't have nearly as much resistance as actual tissue/muscle/etc, so you'll want to make the molds much longer than your intended target would be. My recollection is you shouldn't necessarily expect the ballistic gel to behave like an actual animal with regard to how the bullet performs (and I understand this is still true for the synthetic ballistic gels). The real benefit of it is providing a consistent medium to compare different loads/bullets/calibers. Given that, if you're mixing your own you would want to decide on a recipe and then stick to it, so you have a valid comparison. Hope that helps a bit...

Shoot them in the heart / lungs they all work. Oops maybe your talking about zombies, might not be the answer for them?

I GOOGLED this and found a "recipe" to make your own. It's at Ammoland.com, it uses Knox gelatin and water. It says to use 1 ounce gelatin to every 8 ounces of hot water.

That's what I used. I forget the exact ratio I used, but it was certainly something like that. I found the biggest limiting factor in the whole process for me was finding fridge space to let it cool.
