have fired brass from last barrel that is too tight in the web to fit new barrel

my fired 6br lapua brass from my old barrel is too tight to fit in my new barrel in the web area,
old brass measures .271 at the web , compaired to virgin brass, .269 at the web, i tried a 6.5x47 body die to shrink the web but could not get it down to fit, so throw away the brass and start new?

NOTE, I buy once fired Lake City 7.62 brass and some of it was fired in fat chambered machine guns. I use a 30-06 full length die and then a small base die if needed to size the base of the case first. I then size these cases in a standard .308 die and then check the cases in a JP Enterprise case gauge that is closer to SAAMI minimum diameter. You can also try small base 30-06, .308, or .243 dies if you have them. Also some reloaders use a carbide .45 ACP die to size the base of Lake City 7.62 fired in machine guns.

Yes. I’m told by my gunsmith who makes dies with a small base effect (no separate die needed) that it will maintain the right web diameter but it won’t always fix expanded brass. He says that even if it does squeeze down to fit, it needs done every firing.

The problem with using brass from a different barrel is not that you can't size it down, but the expanded size of the case while under pressure in the old chamber vs the new one. Either make the new chamber a few tenths larger by polishing it out or buy new brass. Sizing it down more will usually get you another firing or three but the problem reappears in a short time, usually as bolt click. That's been my experience, ymmv.

Also try a 308 small base die .

If I can buy once fired LC 7.62 brass and make it chamber in my Savage .308 you should be able to fix your sizing problems.

Try pausing at the top of the ram stroke for 4 or 5 seconds to reduce brass spring back.

Or, buy new brass and dodge the extra work.

update, the .308 small base die I had fixed the web problem but caused the shoulder to move .003 longer, this was a easy fix tho, back in my fl bushing neck bump die and was all good

i think its simply the web was .471 was push back to .469 to.468 a difference of .002 to .003, hince the change in length, its got to go somewhere so went longer.

I was thinking you do not want to trim the cases until they were fired in your chamber. The cases may get shorter when fired and if trimmed beforehand they may end up too short. Meaning the case taper between the .308 and your 6br might be more and the upper section of your cases were reduce in diameter more than needed.

If you aren't able to adjust your small base die enough for shoulder length, the after using the small base die run it through your regular die to get the shoulder where you want it.

Ed, Is this the same as using the Lee Bulge Buster pushing the case through the bottom of the 45 ACP Lee Factory Crimp Die? If so, doing that would probably have prevented the shoulders from growing as they did with the small base die...?

edit added: may not fix the described problem but unlikely it would hurt anything since the 308 case above the web is about 0.020" smaller than a 45 ACP. I may play with a couple cases just to see since it's unlikely to result in a significantly stuck case.
