Rebarreling Rem 700 338 RUM to straight-walled cartridge???

I have a Rem 700 in 338 RUM that I would like to rebarrel to shoot a straight-walled cartridge that would be legal to hunt with in Ohio. If the cartridge would work with the internal magazine, that would be amazing. I am not aware of any cartridges that would fit this bill, so maybe I should just sell the 338RUM.

Humorous backstory: About 20 years ago, I walked into a gun store with my brother. He was a fairly broke college student, but he had enough money in his pocket for that month's rent. He walked to the counter and asked if they had any wood-stocked large-caliber Rem 700s in stock. The clerk chuckled and handed my brother this rifle in 338 RUM. Without hesitation, my brother declared, "I'll take it." I protested, "What will you use that for?" He replied, "What can't I shoot with this?" I don't know how he paid rent that month, but we still have the gun.

You should be able to fit up to a 458 Lott in there. Unless the belt is a no-no. Either that or a 458 Win Mag could be downloaded enough. There may be some difference in the magazine box, but someone else will have to verify that. I thought the ultra mags used a different box to accommodate the wider case body.

Ohio's DNR page is pretty vague. It seems about any straight-walled cartridge greater than 357 will do:

"Straight-walled cartridge rifles in the following calibers: All straight-walled cartridge calibers from a minimum of .357 to a maximum of .50. Shotguns and straight-walled cartridge rifles can be loaded with no more than three shells in the chamber and magazine combined."

Thank you for your help.

That is certainly a consideration. I've got a shotgun and handguns that I could use. I was just exploring the idea of a potentially fun (but likely more frustrating) project.
I was gonna suggest getting a 450 Marlin or 444 Marlin chambered barrel but I think it's alot easier to just pick up a Ruger 450 Bushmaster for under or around 500.00. They shoot well and ammo is easy to find if you didn't want to bother reloading.

Think I'd sell it and use the funds to buy a Ruger 450 Bushmaster.

Well, with the advice from your comments, I posted this on Armslist and I'm planning to trade the 338 RUM for a brand new Henry 44.

I have another LA Rem 700 in 7mm Rem Mag that I might keep exploring this opportunity with.

While I certainly don't want to be responsible for aiding in anyone selling a rifle, but if it was a necessary option to obtain the proper one for the job, I guess that's not such a bad thing. I think those Henry lever guns are real cool rifles. Also a great whitetail rifle in states that only allow straightwall cartridges. Good luck. John

Selling a rifle is almost always a loss. But trading for a more appropriate rifle...that's a win. I appreciate the counsel from this forum.

Well, I officially traded the Rem 700 for a Henry 44 mag. I may still go down the road of converting a Rem 700 to a straight-walled cartridge, but I'll put it to rest for now.

Before you sell or trade.

I built, along with a few friends, 458wm using .452 barrels and Parker bullets. They're sub minute accurate to 1060yds. This was our answer to an Ohio deer cartridge.
