6 BR-DX!

I'm contemplating chambering a new barrel for longer range fun. With my limited experience with a 6BR-DX, it seems to work and to makes a lot of sense. It retains a longer neck than a Dasher or BRX, has a 40° shoulder and the capacity is pretty much right between a BR and a Dasher. Anybody want to share their experiences with a 6 BR-DX or give any pro's and cons vs other popular 6 BR variants?

I’ve had two rifles in 6 br-dx for 7 or 8 years. I don’t shoot competitions just paper and prairie dogs with them. They both shoot extremely well both have been easy to find a good load for. I did end up fire forming just as you would with a dasher because I had trouble with failure to fire with just hard jamming bullets in one of the rifles. Both are set up with short freebore .063 I believe for 80gr Berger’s.

I played with it years ago and still have a hunting rifle in it. I like it better than the Dasher because you can make brass easier and get all the speed needed for 105 class bullets. The BR-AI is even easier to make good brass for is the reason I went with it. The DX is a great round no doubt! When I tried it at 600 yard BR I won some, but looking back I was unknowingly going through a period of not so good bullets back before all these great custom bullets. I probably would have stuck with it if I had found a great combo (barrel and bullets again!).

Thanks for the feedback. In my limited experience with it, I have to agree about how easy they were to tune.

I guess I'm looking for a reason not to choose it over a Bra, Brx or a Dasher. My perspective has been that a Dasher is the hardest way to get to basically the same place, followed by a BRX. The Bra is easy but doesn't offer much of anything over the easiest of all..a straight 6BR.

That's why I'm asking for more experiences and thoughts on it. Keep em' coming. Thanks!--M

It's the only br improved that I didn't break records with of the 3 I've tried. (Dasher, DX, BRA) I have no idea if I was experiencing bad barrels, bullets, or possibly just bad practices on my end. It would shoot scary small some days, but I just never got it to agg. I gave it 3 seasons, and about 6 barrels. Just my experiences for what it's worth.

Edit to add. I did win a couple 2 guns with it at our championship matches. So it can win against tough crowds. In those instances I had done a warm season retune and it liked rl 15. I had best luck the other 11 months on 4895 lol.

Tom, I remember contacting you and comparing notes on the DX back then. I absolutely had to retune from spring to summer, as I did with the Dasher. I am talking complete IBS 600 yard seasons. I NEVER had to do that with my straight BR’s. I have not shot a complete season with the AI yet, but not experiencing retuning at my home range at 500 yards. I think if you get much over the BR or BR-AI you dont get near full case capacity and has something to do with it getting out of tune. But I am not the Know All End All of Knowledge. Just going by experience.

Speaking for myself, I don't mind a little of that and I feel like I can keep up with tune fairly well. I just don't like anything that's very finicky about what it will shoot. I think some, or a lot of that is in the barrel but some cartridges seem to just be easy to make shoot, right outta the gate. A 30BR comes to mind.

I`m gonna go,,Ive been working nearly ever day last couple weeks and I cant believe I will be in any more danger from the China Virus at Dry Branch than I am at work,,
Oh, I agree! I think the chances of catching it are very slim. Now, the neighbors might call and report ya, though. I don't think they were happy about a gun range being put in. Some might be looking for an excuse to pick up the phone. Seriously, I hope it goes well and you shoot great again.

I had to go out an make some brass, in order to send you some pics Mike.
I think the Bra is a proven winner for sure and so is the Dasher, of all the folks I shoot with know I don't shoot the most part of what everyone else is, I like expermenting with the 6BR family of cases unless something strange development process happens I'm going to shoot this case a little this year it's longer than the BRDX an about .025 thousands shorter than a 6 Dasher only time will tell.
I call my case a 6BRDS

For the most part they hold up well, I've not had one lose it's mind on a given weekend, but I've made small moves here and there throughout a season. I have one that went through a mid life speed up, but I put it back about 4 tenths and it is as good as ever.
