House arrest!

Because of its well-studied and documented effectiveness in treating malaria, there is every reason to believe that chloroquine may also slow or impair the entry of coronavirus into cells.

This from the link that JimT posted:

"The available data are thin. The drugs [chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine] work by decreasing the acidity in endosomes, compartments inside cells that they use to ingest outside material and that some viruses can coopt to enter a cell. But the main entryway for SARS-CoV-2 is a different one, using its so-called spike protein to attach to a receptor on the surface of human cells. Studies in cell culture have suggested chloroquines have some activity against SARS-CoV-2, but the doses needed are usually high—and could cause serious toxicities.

Encouraging cell study results with chloroquines against two other viral diseases, dengue and chikungunya, didn’t pan out in people in randomized clinical trials. And nonhuman primates infected with chikungunya did worse when given chloroquine. “Researchers have tried this drug on virus after virus, and it never works out in humans. The dose needed is just too high,” says Susanne Herold, an expert on pulmonary infections at the University of Giessen."

The key here is that chloroquine hasn't yet been tested in coronavirus patients in the numbers necessary for statistical significance. Nonetheless, it showed clinical promise in the small number of patients described in the linked report. The naysayers can argue all they want about previous tests suggesting it might not work, but until it is tested, their arguments are meaningless. COVID-19 isn't dengue, or chikungunya, or zika, nor is it the same as any other virus outside the coronavirus family. Even a number of closely-related coronaviruses are unable to cross species and enter human cells. There is every reason to test chloroquine, and no good reason not to. It may prove ineffective, but until the tests are done, no can state with any certainty what the outcome will be. Given the severity of this pandemic and its impact on nearly every country on the planet, testing drugs that have previously been approved for other diseases that have a good safety record is the smart and prudent thing to do until other more specific drugs and/or vaccines can be produced. The naysayers are certainly welcome to refuse such treatment if they become infected, and potentially wait months, or even years, until these other treatments become available. In the event it becomes necessary, I'll take my chances with chloroquine.

I am real olde & can remember my mom ordering me not to open the light proof window covers at night during WWII when Germanian U boats were less than 20 miles offshore from our house - I complied because I feared the consequences of disobedience and also my grandfather was in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
Wow ,where were you living at the time?

We were living in a suburb S.E. of Boston, MA but our family had property on Cape Cod, about 80 miles away (long trip at 35 mph with gas rationing so infrequent visits). City light seen offshore will out-line a merchant vessel steaming along the coast, the indirect glow of city light is also enough thus mandatory black outs.

I was 6 years old when the last U Boat was sunk off RI (1945).

The point of all this that for common good, restrictions can be placed on your activities like no social gatherings or pulling your window shades down.

Some stuff about the black outs:

With all the discussion of choroquine I hope I don't see shortages of mosquito nets. Parasites vs. viruses? liver vs. lungs

There is no Law Higher than the Constitution... Period end of story. I posted the four powers given to the government previously... Making me stay home was not one of them..

Tell me why then is it not illegal for a person with HIV to have unprotected sex with another person and is not required to inform them of their illness...?
Now I know why they call you “Dirty Steve.”

Not legal.

I sometimes (in the darkest parts of the night) wonder if this isn't a case of pink elephant prevention. Having girded our homes with moats, and filtered our air with social distancing, tanking our economy and upsetting the common order, we may find that we did such a great job that we never saw a pink elephant.

But I only think that late at night...

Posting this here as well. The US is about two weeks behind Italy (time since 100 confirmed cases). The number of confirmed cases in the US is currently growing, as you can see from the chart, much faster than 33% per day. If we assume, just for illustration purposes, it slows down to 33% daily increase, in two weeks you have 1.8 million confirmed cases (from 32,640 today).

The U.S. has 1.3% Moronflu infection. South Korea is ahead of us at 1% infection rate. The numbers are collected by Liberal News Media and Democrats. This has wrecked the best economy in the world. The Democrats will play their hand in November.

When did it become legal for the Gov. to place the entire state under house arrest?
Is this still The United States of America ?
Does the Constitution still have meaning?
When did I become responsible for the health of others? You can stay locked in your home if you are worried but I can still live my life as I choose!
Essential buisness can stay open, who says what is essential? Liquor stores are essential, gun shops are not according to this liberal bedwetting piece of crap. How can the governor decide who gets to work and who doesn't?
This is unbelievable! Hope this isn't to political, apologies
if it is.
Rant over!

With all due respect...

For all of those who are playing "Baby Whine" ; about your so-called "Rights" being violated , let me give a short course in Govt. procedures and POTUS authority . I'm not a lawyer , or a politician , but I did pay attention in class ...

Last Tuesday morning ; POTUS stood in front of cameras of every network , and made one very simple proclamation . " I am declaring a National Emergency Health Crisis due to the spread of Corona-virus ".
The moment He spoke that phrase ; that gave immense power and authority to states Governors , to establish policies for their states , to safeguard the safety , health , and welfare of their citizens . And that includes putting some of your "Rights" on hold for the safety and benefit of the population . All the population . Sorry your being inconvenienced . You'll get over it . We will get through this as a nation , and the sun will continue to rise in the east , and set in the west .

China put people in prison , or just made them "disappear" for violating their Lockdown orders . India will put you in prison for up to a year . And other countries are taking similar measures .

This stuff develops into pneumonia , and causes suffocation . Ever see someone die that way ? It ain't pretty , trust me ... That's why all the Governors are asking for ventilators , and we don't have enough to go around for even one state , let alone the country . They will be made as fast as humanly possible . My Aunt , Niece , and Daughter are Nurses , and they haven't been home in three weeks . They are sleeping at work , so as not to risk contaminating their families . Time to put on our "Big-Boy" panties and join Team America ! And stop with the "Whine" ! It's un-becoming .....

From the NZ police. (A derogatory term for police in NZ is "pig" and so it's a clever play on that, the nursery rhyme and the message.)

Let me start by repeating the intelligent course of action: STAY HOME! Follow the government's advice!

Now on to my argument...

I think you might have over-played your hand there. Rights are rights. They are not modified by laws, the opposite is true.

Laws have been found, on quite a frequent basis, to be unconstitutional. The declaration of emergency is a law, not a constitutional provision. Therefore, it could be unconstitutional and a violation of people's rights. In order to know, one would have to petition the government for redress of the grievance (that means using the court system).

Here is the 1st amendment of the constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

So, how does a declaration of emergency, that allows the limiting of assembly of persons pass muster? I don't think it does.

I could also argue the 14th amendment comes into play...

I am NOT advocating for violating the stay home, lockdown, or shelter in place orders!

What I am advocating is taking the "We will violate your rights in the event we believe it is in the best interest of everyone else" out of our government and replacing it with a sense of civic duty among the free people of the United States that know with liberty comes responsibility.

Just my opinion, worth every penny you paid for it...

Well said with liberty comes responsibility!
