Digital Micrometer--For what?

My awesome wife could see that I'm going nuts stuck here @ home, so she bought me a digital micrometer to play with for reloading. I've been reloading for quite a few years & have never needed one before, but now that I have this new toy--What can I use it for? What does this do that my calipers wont?

Depending on the modal you have, 5 decimals of precision so one can fulfill their OCD. It also eats batteries so you can feel good about contributing to the economy during these tough times.

Micrometers are for serious work where demanding numbers have to be absolutely reliable. Calipers are approximate. If you have a set of gauge blocks, you can check your calipers for accuracy at various lengths.

you can see that your 308 bullet is not 308 for one thing
measure the base
if turning necks very essential to know loaded round dia

while calipers are fine for general use in reloading they are not
"precise".
when you start looking at precision in reloading, more micrometers, fewer calipers.

Shooting benchrest years ago we used "clicks" and loading extra long to "seat" bullets in chamber. I can see where micrometers would be beneficial for neck turning, however I seldom shoot the PPCs anymore.

Below a Colt 5.56 Field gauge at 1.4736

The same headspace gauge in a "adjusted" Hornady cartridge case headspace gauge.

And below a fired case from my AR15 rifle then the die is adjusted for .003 shoulder bump.

And last but not least if you have chronologically gifted eyesight the BIG digital numbers help a great deal.

I hear that!!

1) measuring bullet diameters
2) measuring loaded rounds at neck
3) measuring necks* (if it’s a tubing style mix)
4) checking expander mandrel diameters.
