SLUG shotgun project, share pics?

I've hunted deer in a slug-gun state for 30+ years. If you want accuracy, look into the Savage 220 bolt guns. Pump guns can be made accurate but the Savages are accurate out of the box. I ran an 870 sps 20 ga for a few years & IMHO it was the most accurate production slug gun available until the Savages came on the market (rem 260 gr. accu-tips are hard to beat in the 220).

If you have to run a pump, & it has to be a 12, I would go 870 (an older one would be preferred) & pick up a sps cantilever barrel. Mossbergs are "clunky" the newer Rem 870s rust right in the box. I've sold a pile of both Mossy 500 & Rem 870 (chevy vs ford).. I actually switched to handguns for a time as my straight-wall Contender would shoot circles around the pumps. Three years ago, the geniuses at the IADNR finally allowed us to use straight-wall cartridge rifles, I switched & didn't look back.

Find a older browning BPS deer gun its a pump and has a 5 inch choke tube for slugs with lightfield slugs it shoot's a 2-3 inch group at a 100yd's and have shot deer at 150yds

If you choose a pump go with a rifled barrel with a cantilever scope mount. Most pumps and autos have some play between the action and barrel. Having the scope mounted to the barrel instead of the action helps.

A 20 gage is adequate. I've shot mostly 12s but switched to the 20 the last 3 years. Deer dont seem to notice the difference. They are lighter to carry and less recoil.

As stated above you can't go wrong with the Savage 220. Fairly accuracte and decent trigger compared to most shotguns. I've been through a number of combinations over the last 35 years. I'm currently shooting the 220. The other 2 I still have is a
Remington 1100 with a Hastings barrel and Mossberg 695. All 3 shoot well. Best overall I'd pick the 220. Light to carry, good trigger and fairly accurate. For economy an old Mossberg 695 bolt action would be a good choice. They shoot well and can be found cheep. Cons - Horindus trigger and when new the bolt feels like it dragging through gravel.

My Mossberg 500 cantilever rifled barrel never looses zero. Barrel fits my Turkey gun. Buying a "combo" gets 2 barrel at a lower price.20200312_120356.jpg

The 20" barreled turkey model, with screw in chokes, can have a scope mounted on the receiver, using the correct base. But will not hold perfect zero.

Gun and extra barrel was not a combo. Factory camo. 20200312_121643.jpg

Edit/add -
The cantilever slug barrel comes ported from the factory.

Pump and semi auto Shot guns with slug barrels still carry and feel like a shotgun..
I ran 870s and 1187 personally.
Had a few chances to shoot others bolt guns.

Savage , mossberg and browning .
All 3 felt better than a bunny /Turkey gun with a deer specific barrel on them.
I'm not trying to sound like a jerK at all. I grew up in Pa and moved just across the ny state line in 2001 and chautauqua county was slug ,muzzleloader or handgun only thru 2010 . I never could get comfortable or used to the slug gun deal .
Brutal on the pocket book to try different ammo out.
Brutal on the meat if you had near the shoulder hit.
Brutal on your own shoulder if you shot more than a few in a sitting.

If I ever have to go back to slugs it will be a bolt action.

I have an older 12 gauge 870 with a Hastings slug barrel and cantilever scope mount. I always thought it was a good set up. I got a Savage 220 20 gauge a few years ago and they really shoot! When I need to use a shotgun for deer the 220 gets the nod.
