6BR and AR Comp load

I actually tried N135 in this 12 twist barrel and the AR Comp seemed more accurate with the 80 Bergers. The big difference was when I cleaned the barrel. After shooting with AR Comp, the first few patches would be black then the rest would be reasonably clean after that. After shooting with N135, it looked like a colony of smurfs took up residence in the barrel. I couldn't get the patches to stop coming out smurf blue and just gave up.

BTW, I swapped barrels to the 8 twist Shilen and will go to the range today to see how the bolt lift is after firing.

As decoppering agent becomes more common people will learn those first patches are decoppering agent.

Would the AR Comp powder be a good one in a 6br for 600 f class? If so, who's using it and how is your success?

I tested AR-Comp in one of my dashers a while back (F-class rifle). Accuracy and speed very very similar to H-4895.

Ar Comp is an amazing powder. Why it is completely ignored I have no idea.

Should really be quite good for any bullet weight in 6br from 55 to 115. It's nearly perfect for 70 to 108.

It's like a couple guys tried it on this forum a decade ago, said it was too fast for 105s and that was gospel. Then it was forgotten at Accurate Shooter Forum.

It is essentially interchangeable with h4895 for burn rate and velocity. So in practical terms it does the same job as one of the most popular powders on this forum, IS LESS TEMP SENSITIVE, has much better lot consistency, and is far easier on the barrel with a decoppering agent that actually works...

It must be the name. If it was TZ 1234 it would be the secret sauce of the elite I suppose hahahaha

I keep reading internet posts about it’s temperature insensitivity, but I haven’t saw enough real data to make me want to abandon known successful loads and start over with a new powder. Personally, I don’t care about a decoppering agent, since none of my barrels build up much copper. Those that do are easily cleaned with proper techniques.

Having a decoppering agent isn't about easier cleaning. It's about shooting longer strings more accurately. Why anyone would NOT want to do that I have no clue. I know that there are lots of guys that mock the entire concept, but in my opinion they only do it out of ignorance. Who would want to give away free accuracy?

Time will prove out what I'm saying. Powder tech is changing. I'm sure there are disciplines that clean every 20 rounds, but those disciplines are shrinking into obscurity as the other disciplines that require longer strings are growing.

As a varmint hunter the idea of cleaning every 200 rounds is a very good thing.

I'm not really sure what the fascination is with having to copy everybody who won something. People completely ignore David Tubb and he's won everything. Discovering whether or not a powder works is as simple as buying a pound and trying it. There's not really a process

First off I said nothing negative and you have absolutely no idea what real world experience that I possess.

Bradley is a good guy, but he is really passionate about what he likes. I simply gave him some reasons that people aren’t going to drop their known powders that they are probably already well stocked on just because something new comes along. I’ve actually way heard more good things about AR Comp than bad, but it’s a solution to problems that I don’t have.

It's always good to have a good alternative. I bought 1 pound and tested it in 1 cartridge. It definitely works.

With all the hard bolt lift on those pieces of brass, were you getting any ejector marks on the case heads ??
I have noticed that occasionally in my savage 6br, when I have a cartridge that I feel a touch of drag when closing the bolt ( needed bumped more), that after I fire those cases, i get a light ejector mark on the case heads. I am assuming that in my situation, it causes a slight over pressure in my cases. I must be getting some spring back when I'm bumping the shoulders. I should actually test each pc of brass in my chamber.
Im not sure if this is your problem, as i think you mentioned that you did NOT have any drag when closing your bolt.

Unfortunately the bolt on my Bighorn doesn't have an ejector. It has a mechanical ejector on the action itself so can't use the ejector mark sign.

It still gets the harder bolt lift but I'm trying out lower loads just to be safe and the accuracy seems OK. I went to the range last Sunday and tried out 28.4 and 29.0 grains of AR Comp. Doesn't seem to be any decrease in accuracy at the lower load. 5 shot groups at 100 yards:

I let the RO shoot my rifle on my previous visit and he shot a 5 shot group in the 0's with it which was his best ever. I think he said his best group before that was in the .2s. I gave him that target to take with him. He was pretty happy so he made a couple of very nice wind flags and gave them to me on my Sunday visit. The ROs at the range I go to are really great. I never used flags before and I was trying to look at the flags and the target at the same time and it was pretty hard. I need to work on that. Kinda difficult when you're left eye dominant and shooting right handed.

Thanks for the tip. I've just been loading with a .005 jump. I guess I should try it against the lands.

Don't be afraid to try jumping more too. 3 shot groups should show you. Im jumping my 80’s about .010 and that tightened my groups, getting some vertical out. Hopefully they will tighten up a tad more for you. Best of luck !
