Its really winter now!

Mike the locals in North Georgia told me that my P/U would do better in the snow and black ice with a cord of wood in the bed. Is this wood for traction or a fire?

My pickup is already loaded with the snow plow on so I’m just grabbing a few sticks while I check the trailcam. It’s probably best I don’t leave it inside with me in case of a sudden stop may give me a headache.

Edit: I really need to set the clock on that camera lol

It’s not over yet, it took a couple hours thawing out vehicles yesterday with snow-rain-more snow on them. Could barely get the doors open to start them and after running down the highway they froze shut on us thought the locks weren’t unlocked for awhile.

Josh weren't you the guy bitchen about the snow last week? Are you having mixed emotions about Texas?

I’m not sure, yet! The weather here is like my wife. It can’t seem to make up It’s mind! One day I’m in a tee shirt and the next day I’m in flannel and long johns!

I endure the cold to be able to shoot in the not as cold. I work at Red Dog Mine in Alaska for weeks to be able to afford my hobby in Butte, Montana.

Today is 28, 15mph winds, and snowing in Butte. It is range day and I wish it were better weather but I am going anyway. I only have to remind myself that I could be at work where it is -35 with wind chills to -50.

I like to think it toughens me up.

Josh, Riesel here. That works out to 5.2 acres per animal and would be OK if that was all high nutrient browse and forbs but the Hill Country really isn't noted for that.
Protein feeders will help the deer a lot, particularly the ones carrying fawns and will help with antler growth. That many mouths to feed, 500 pounds a week is probably more like it.
The other alternative, next deer season do some major culling, especially the does and "cull bucks". Invite friends if necessary. Forty deer at a sighting would be better. Remember those sixty you saw ain't all of them. You don't thin them, nature will.
Best Regards,
Robert

Thanks for that. I put out 150-200 lbs. a week. It’s a mix of corn, alfalfa and protein pellets. There are three other feeding stations run by the other residents on the ranch. There’s a “busy body” guy that runs the animal program. I haven’t met him, yet. I hear he’s a real force of nature and put himself in charge. I’m just keeping my head down for now while I get settled. I’m used to well fed Eastern Whitetails. 200 pounders. These deer looked skinny so I started feeding them. I’m sure there’ll be an annual meeting coming up and I’ll get more info on the management program. I’ll remember your input.
Josh

I woke up to 50. Sheesh, I’m gonna have to put my slippers on to feed the deer! 77 projected for Sunday.
Yep. Pretty nice in Kingwood (NE of Houston) today too. Had to open the garage doors and enjoy the 60 F clear afternoon while loading some rifle ammo (including unloading a few rounds -oops) and putting a red dot on a new pistol. Winter is pretty awesome here, best part of the year. The weather is usually pretty nice from early October through early April, and the rest of the year I can watch my favorite bunch of cheaters play baseball. From May through September it’s too hot to work outside, but not too hot to go shooting. ... But I love Kerrville and really anywhere within 50-75 miles around there - that whole area is awesome.
