Need 30 br reamer

I'm building a 30 br I don't want to wait 12 -18 weeks to have one made by Manson or JGS I can get a PTG reamer online that is in stock . Do any benchrest shooters use PTG or is it worth my time to bite to bullet and wait and get one made from another company? Thanks Warren

A lot of great barrels are done with PTG reamers, don’t hesitate getting one if you’re on a time table.

Dwight Scott ordered me a PTG 30BR reamer when I first got into SR score shooting. I've had good luck with it. Also bought my 30 Jaguar 2 reamer made by PTG from Sid Goodling just before he passed away. I've also had real good luck with it. PTG wouldn't be my 1st choice knowing what I know now. I have another 30BR reamer and a 6x47 reamer that Hugh Henriksen made and IMO he without a doubt makes the finest reamers out there. Trouble is sometimes it can take forever to get a reamer from him.

You can always use a 6mm Bench Rest reamer with a separate neck and throat reamer, and cut the same exact chamber that a 30 B-R would cut. Then you wouldn't have to wait on a new reamer.

I have cut several hundred 30 B-R chambers this way, and every one has turned out perfect!

Just to add some info. The Grizzly reamer is set up to use 6BR Remington brass, not Lapua. The base to case mouth length is 1.570" on the reamer.

Most Lapua cases when expanded up with a mandrel will end up around 1.510" or so. I have no idea if this will hurt anything. If you are shooting a 30BR using the Grizzly reamer, please chime in.

hmmmmmmmmmm
but it you fire form you end up with 1.545 trimmed
I let mine grow to 1.550.
maybe someone will chime in on neck thickness on fire formed vs expanded brass in 30br

It says remington brass and may very well be, but thats the original print that most 30br on the line is.

Thanks for the response everyone. But is the conscience that lapua brass will work just fine with the PTG reamer print from grizzly. I was never good with the learning books but it seams kind of dump to make a reamer for old Remington brass detentions when most everyone uses lapua but it does say 1.570 . I'm kind of learning all this benchrest gun stuff on my own no buddy I know were I live in Montana does this stuff so again thanks a buch for all the info everyone!!!

My guess is the print was never updated. Instead of buying one you could always just let your gunsmith use his. You know itll be right then and the off the shelf whidden die is absolutely perfect

What part of Mt. do you live in.

I'm in Kalispell no one shoots short range benchrest at the range I go to . I know Missoula has many very good long range benchrest shooters that shoot deep creek . Maybe someday I will get into that and make some friends up their and learn a bunch of stuff !

Kalispell is kinda of a hotbed of gun stuff. A couple af barrel makers, a co. that makes titanium ar's, Montana rifle co.

I think that one of the guys that shoots (very well) at Deep creek lives around Kalispell, he might be of help. Give Alex Wheeler a call, I'm sure he could help you out.

Hal.

If you expand up Lapua brass in multiple steps, Mine usually comes out to 1.519, if you go the fire forming way 1.540 give or take. if you get a 1.570 PTG and it's possible it will be a little more longer ask me How I know ! You now have a bunch of extra freebore or dead space so pick your poison ! 1.510 trimmed brass now has 60 thousands free bore not 0 ! I had to Sent my PTG Reamer back it was supposed to be a 1.550 and it was 1.570 ! Extra Neck Length = extra free bore or distance to the lands.

How did you measure that neck length, that sinclair tool?

Please don't use a reamer of questionable dimensions. The problems that ensue will cause you more head aches than you can possibly imagine. Assumptions on reamer dimensions never end well.

The dimensions needed for a 30BR reamer based on the excellent Lapua 6BR case are well known and commonly used in reamers from all mfgs.

An alternative to waiting is having the barrel fitted and chambered with a known good 30BR reamer.

I just can't stress this enough.

Good shootin'. :) -Al

Necked up 30br cases shorten up to about 1.510-1.520. Opinions vary but I prefer the brass to shorten up. We know where the brass is moving, and its cleaned up after turning. Blowing out long brass always bothered me because some of the shoulder or body has to be stretching. Personally I would use a 1.520" chamber length and follow Randy's 1.75 degree zero freebore with a .331 or .332" neck. I would not mind a 1.5 degree lead either, but I also dont mind bullets way up the neck.
